1. Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)

The Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is designed to meet the health insurance needs of the bottom 40% of the population based on income. This scheme offers medical insurance coverage of Rs. 5 lakhs for the poor and vulnerable. The key benefits of this scheme include:

  • Hospitalisation coverage for up to 3 days
  • Post-hospitalisation coverage for up to 15 days
  • Coverage for all pre-existing conditions without any waiting period
  • No limit on the number of family members covered
  • Cashless treatment at any government or private hospital across India
  • Coverage for 1,393 medical procedures
  • Coverage for treatment costs, medications, physician fees, diagnostics, ICU charges, etc.
  • An annual premium of just ₹30

2. Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana (AABY)

The Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana is another Indian government-run health insurance program. People involved in any of the 48 occupations listed on the website can apply for a membership with a yearly subscription of Rs. 200. 

This scheme provides both life insurance and accidental death coverage. Its coverage details include:

  • ₹30,000 sum insured for natural death
  • ₹75,000 sum insured for accidental death
  • Coverage limited to the earning member or head of the family

3. Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESI)

The Employees’ State Insurance Scheme regulates the expenditures on accidents and other risks in the workplace, particularly for employees.

 This scheme is available for those earning up to Rs. 21,000 per month (Rs. 25,000 for persons with disabilities) for which employers and employees pay premiums. Its coverage features include:

  • Medical benefits for the insured and their family
  • Sickness benefits for up to 91 days annually
  • Extended sickness benefits for specific long-term ailments
  • Enhanced sickness benefits for sterilisation (7 days for males and 14 for females)
  • Maternity benefits for 26 weeks, extendable by 4 weeks
  • Disablement benefits
  • Dependent benefits in case of work-related injury fatalities

4. Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)

Launched to enhance health insurance penetration in India, the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana provides insurance for accidental death and disability. For an annual premium of Rs. 12, you can access the following coverage:

  • ₹2,00,000 sum insured for accidental death or total disability
  • ₹1,00,000 sum insured for partial disability

The premium is automatically deducted from your bank account each year, and you need an Aadhar card and a bank account to subscribe.

5. Central Government Health Scheme

This scheme offers health insurance services to central government employees regardless of whether they work in the judiciary, executive, legislative, or press. Eligible employees and pensioners can enjoy benefits such as:

  • Coverage for treatment and medication
  • Specialist consultations at government hospitals
  • Indoor treatment at government and empanelled hospitals
  • Family welfare services
  • Maternity expenses coverage
  • AYUSH treatment coverage (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy)

6. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana

Initiated by the Maharashtra government, this scheme offers health insurance to families below the poverty line. 

It provides cashless benefits to families with yellow, orange, or red ration cards, as well as those in government orphanages and shelters. The scheme provides the following coverages:

  • ₹1,50,000 sum insured for hospitalisation
  • ₹2,50,000 sum insured for renal transplants
  • Comprehensive coverage for the entire family

7. Bhamashah Swasthya Bima Yojana

Targeted at residents of rural Rajasthan, the Bhamashah Swasthya Bima Yojana includes beneficiaries from the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana and the National Food Security Act. Its coverage includes:

  • ₹30,000 for general ailments
  • ₹3,00,000 for critical illnesses
  • Cashless treatment covering all hospitalisation expenses
  • Pre-hospitalisation expenses for up to 7 days
  • Post-hospitalisation expenses for up to 15 days
  • OPD treatment coverage

8. Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY)

The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana is aimed at workers in the unorganised sector, covering about 93% of India’s workforce. Its coverage includes:

  • ₹30,000 sum insured for you and your family
  • Hospitalisation expenses
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Transportation expenses up to ₹1,000
  • Cashless insurance
  • An annual premium of just ₹30
