UDAIPUR: Hindustan Zinc’s 38th edition of Mohan Kumar Mangalam Football Championship, a National Football Tournament begins on 24th February at Hindustan Zinc Football Stadium at Zawar, Udaipur. The tournament is organized by the company every year since 1976 in the memory of Shri Mohan Kumar Manglam, former Union Minister for Steel and Mines, Government of India.
Every year several teams across the country participate in the tournament. “This year, around 16 teams – from Udaipur, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Dehradoon, Ahmedabad, Hisar, Meerut and Himachal Pradesh have confirmed their entries for this national tournament” informed Pavan Kaushik, Head-Corporate Communication, Hindustan Zinc.
The company has been supporting sports and sportsperson in the country. Recently, Hindustan Zinc sponsored Krishna Poonia, the National Women Discus-Throw Champion of India and the first Indian women to win a gold medal in the track and field events at Commonwealth Games 2010. Star discus thrower Krishna Poonia’s quest for the medal begins for the 2014 Incheon (South Korea) Asian Games and Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, Scotland and 2016 Olympics at Rio.
Earlier, Hindustan Zinc has supported and sponsored athletes like Mr. Bhupendra Vyas, 7 Gold Medals winner of Commonwealth Games in Power-Lifting event, Ms. Mala Sukhwal – Gold Medalist in Women Power-Lifting, Ms. Bhakti Sharma – Swimming Champion and Mr. Jabbar Mohammed the Volleyball Player. The company also has a stadium at Rajsamand in Rajasthan.
Vedanta Group’s company Sesa Goa has developed a Sesa Football Academy in Goa on the reclaimed mine. Overseas, Konkola Copper Mine, a Vedanta’s group company in copper business in Zambia, is also promoting Football, Tennis, Squash and Golf.
