NEW DELHI: Vedanta Limited, a globally diversified natural resources company extends support to the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), on World Youth Skills Day 2016 through the company’s youth skill training programmes.

“Vedanta has some of the most comprehensive youth skills training programmes in India. Our aim is to ensure a broad-based inclusive socioeconomic growth for India by leveraging its demographic dividend and localizing the availability of skills. We envision a close collaboration with the Government to optimize the impact of our intensive programmes”, says Roma Balwani, President – Group Communications and Sustainable Development, Vedanta.

The Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India (GOI), felicitated Mr. Dipchand Sancaolkar, Vice-Principal, Vedanta-Sesa Technical School (STS) as ‘The Best Instructor in the State of Goa’. With extensive expertise in training youth as instrument mechanics, fitters, machinists, draughtsman and electricians, Mr. Sancaolkar’s commitment has helped place students of STS in some of the largest Multi-National Corporations (MNCs).

The Vedanta—Sesa Technical School (STS) in Goa has till date trained 1,245 students by imparting technical knowledge and providing vocational training, thereby enhancing their opportunities for securing jobs or being self-employed. Over the last three years, STS has maintained a 100% result rate in the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) trade examinations. The computer skills training institute in Goa has benefitted 3,000 young candidates across the state. Another unique initiative by Vedanta is the Sesa Football Academy (SFA). Established in June 1999 in Goa, on a rehabilitated mine, SFA has till date produced 123 footballers at the national and international level.

Vedanta has skill development programmes that are designed to empower women, though its project Sakhi. The company’s efforts have benefitted 32,600 rural women in about 1,500 Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the communities, across the locations of its operations.

Over the last three years, Sesa Technical School, Goa, has maintained a 100% result rate in the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) trade examinationsAt Vedanta’s Jharsuguda operations, in this year, 220 girls in 6 villages were provided with training for tailoring. Women members of Vedanta’s ‘Subhalaxmi Cooperative’ were trained on different farm and non-farm trades including Mushroom Cultivation, Backyard Poultry, Commercial Farming, Phenyl making, Paper Bag making, while 330 young students benefitted through Vedanta Computer Literacy centres in 4 villages.

At Vedanta’s Malco operations in Tamil Nadu, in partnership with IED Dharmapuri, food product processing training, handicraft and art work training, computer training was organized for the rural youth, this year. In partnership with IED Dharmapuri, and NABARD, Malco also provided an Advanced Tailoring Training programme benefitting 42 women and Rexine Products Making Training Program, benefitting 32 people. In partnership with the KVPMNS NGO, Malco has held Jute Bag Making training programme benefitting 30 participants. Malco plans to organise skill training programs for 200 youngsters during FY 2016-17, which includes AC, fridge, washing machine mechanic training, fashion designing/beautician training, advanced tailoring program and mobile/mobile accessories mechanic training program.

At Sterlite Copper, one of Vedanta’s group companies, the ‘Tamira Muthukkal’ project has the objective to mobilize, motivate and train unemployed, unskilled youth and facilitate suitable employment linkages. Since 2014, in association with International Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) institute of skills, three vocational training courses of Electrician, Data entry operation cum Tally and sewing machine operation are provided to the rural youth. So far 454 youngsters have completed their training in 13 batches and 71% of the students are employed.

BALCO, Vedanta’s subsidiary in Chhattisgarh, organized a drawing competition on Skill India, and held a road show by the skill school students to motivate the youth to come and join the Skill India movement.

On World Youth Skills Day, one of the trainees from the Cairn Centre of Excellence (CCOE), Jodhpur, Vishnu Pandit was felicitated with the ‘Skill Icon of the Month’ Award by Rajasthan Skills Livelihood Corporation. The Cairn Centre of Excellence is a premier world-class vocational training center and a Cairn India flagship initiative in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Cairn India also has a Cairn Enterprise Centre (CEC), a vocational training center in Barmer, which was established in 2007 and since its inception, a total of about 12000 students have been trained in various vocational and enterprise development skills. Some of the vocational courses taught at CEC are Advance Electrician, Basic Computers, Mobile Repairing, Welding, Masonry, Domestic Electrical Repairing and trainings in BPO.

On World Youth Skills Day, Cairn India conducted a public speaking session where one student from each of the trades would speak on the ‘World youth skill day & Importance of skill education’, and an essay writing competition on ‘skill development linked with employment opportunities’.
