JAMSHEDPUR: Tata Main Hospital (TMH), Jamshedpur inaugurated a three day Training of Trainers (ToT) course on Basic Emergency Obstetric Care (BEmOC) – to be held from April 9-11, 2012, in collaboration with the Government of Jharkhand, UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) and NRHM (National Rural Health Mission). The programme aims to create a pool of “trainer” doctors qualified to provide BEmOC training to doctors working in various PHCs (Primary Health Centres) and CHCs (Community Health Centres) of Jharkhand.
The Tata Main Hospital (TMH), Jamshedpur is one of only two centres for imparting BEmOC training recognized by Government of Jharkhand. The three day BEmOC ToT programme at TMH will be supported by senior doctors who are national level trainers from Safdurjung Hospital New Delhi along with senior state level counterparts, nurse mentors from UNICEF as well as the active participation and encouragement of NRHM Jharkhand.
India has been grappling with very high infant and maternal mortality rates. 50% of maternal deaths take place within 24 hours of delivery and another 20% within seven days of delivery. The Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) of India stands at 212 (calculated as the number per one lakh life births) which the United Nations aims to reduce to less than 100 by 2015. The state of Jharkhand has an MMR of 261 and is one of the major contributors to maternal deaths in India. This reflects the lack of access to proper healthcare and great shortage of healthcare personnel trained for obstetric care especially in remote rural areas of the state.
To enhance the healthcare facilities and capabilities of the state the Government of Jharkhand, UNICEF and NRHM have undertaken this ambitious initiative taking advantage of the healthcare facilities – such as TMH Jamshedpur – already existing in the state. The doctors who complete the BEmOC ToT course will teach Basic Emergency Obstetric Care to doctors of PHCs and CHCs who actually provide on-ground care to patients. Thus a self sustaining system is created to ensure reach of proper obstetric and neonatal care practices to the remotest areas of Jharkhand over a period of time through a cascading effect. It is expected to favourably impact the infant and maternal mortality rates in Jharkhand and help achieve the United Nations 2015 goal of an MMR less than 100 for India.
