Upholding a Robust CSR Philosophy
Syngene’s approach to Corporate Social Responsibility is deeply rooted in principles of integrity, excellence, and professionalism, which guide every aspect of its operations. The company is dedicated to creating shared value for all stakeholders through a robust ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework. This commitment is formalized through a Board-approved CSR Policy that focuses on creating enduring societal impact in key areas: community health, environmental sustainability, science education, and research. These initiatives are often evidence-based and executed in partnership with experienced organizations like the Biocon Foundation and Biocon Academy, ensuring positive, measurable, and self-sustaining outcomes.
Significant Financial Commitment in FY25
For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, Syngene’s mandated CSR obligation, calculated as two percent of its average net profit for the preceding three financial years (Rs 550.10 Crores), stood at Rs 11 Crores. Demonstrating its dedication, the company spent a substantial Rs 10.74 Crores on various CSR projects during this period. A small unspent amount of Rs 26 Lakh from FY25 was carried forward to the next year, notably, Rs 26 Lakh of this was contributed to the Biocon Foundation for certain multi-year ongoing projects that were yet to be fully utilized by the fiscal year-end. This diligent allocation and utilization of funds highlight Syngene’s commitment to its social promises.
Transforming Lives Through Healthcare Initiatives
Syngene’s healthcare interventions are a cornerstone of its CSR efforts, aiming to make quality medical care accessible to underserved communities. A notable collaboration is with NIMHANS through the Bengaluru Urban Mental Health Initiative (BUMHI). The eLAJ Smart Clinics, an initiative in partnership with the Biocon Foundation, provide affordable and accessible healthcare, primarily serving patients below the poverty line or those with Antyodaya cards, reflecting a significant economic need in the patient demographic. These clinics ensure quality care through standardized procedures, monthly follow-ups, and high medication adherence, with free diagnostic services offered to over 91% of patients.
Community health outreach programs, such as CHAMPS (Child Health Activists Mentoring and Promoting Health in Society), empower government school students to screen adults for hypertension and promote healthy habits, with 100 students screening over 1,000 individuals across 17 villages. Additionally, Syngene supports the Bengaluru City Police’s Parihar program, offering shelter, counseling, legal, and medical support to over 3,500 new cases of women and children in distress this year, successfully reconciling 48.4% of cases and resolving 65% of child cases.
Fostering Future Talent Through Science Education and Research
Recognizing the critical role of education in societal progress, Syngene invests significantly in science education and research, especially for underprivileged students. Initiatives include mobile science labs and inter-school quiz programs like ‘Synquizitive’ that provide experiential learning, strengthening classroom engagement and fostering curiosity among young learners. Over 5,300 students have benefited from mobile science labs and 2,400 from ‘Lab on Bikes’ experiential science exposures in government schools.
The company also runs STEM scholarships and mentorship programs for women, with 21 scientists mentoring 30 women from the second cohort of these programs. The Syngene Research in Science Excellence (SynRISE) offers PhD assistantships, supporting three women PhD students from underprivileged backgrounds at the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) in its first year. Furthermore, collaboration with the Biocon Academy provides industry-aligned training for science graduates, preparing them for careers in the life sciences sector.
Driving Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability
Syngene’s commitment to environmental sustainability is deeply integrated into its operations and culture, with tangible progress across its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priorities. The company has achieved remarkable milestones, with 92% of its total power sourced from renewable energy in FY25, up from 82% in FY24, and 96% green energy usage at its Bengaluru campus. These efforts led to a reduction of 73,207 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. Syngene is actively pursuing a “zero waste-to-landfill” goal, recycling or co-processing 95.47% of hazardous and non-hazardous waste in FY25.
Water conservation remains a key focus, with 64% of total water use coming from reused, recycled, or harvested sources. The Bengaluru campus alone achieved a 67 KLD reduction in daily water use, from 323 KLD to 256 KLD in FY25, with 73% of its water coming from recycled sources. The company has zero-liquid discharge treatment systems at its Bengaluru and Mangaluru facilities. Urban afforestation drives, such as the Miyawaki urban forest project in Mangaluru covering 21,780 sq. ft. with 1,000 native saplings, and the planting of 1,000 saplings across campuses for World Environment Day 2024, contribute to biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. An investment of Rs 9.80 Crores over five years in Bengaluru’s Biocon-Hebbagodi Metro Station promotes sustainable mobility and decongests traffic. The company also supports lake rejuvenation and has transitioned to using 100% recycled A4 paper at its Hyderabad campus.
Holistic Employee Well-being and Inclusive Workplace
Syngene believes that investing in its people is fundamental to scientific excellence and operational success. In FY25, the company launched “Thrive360,” a holistic well-being program addressing physical, emotional, social, financial, and professional dimensions of employee health. This program includes initiatives such as complimentary cancer screenings, global Employee Assistance Program (EAP) coverage, and financial literacy programs. These efforts contribute to a resilient, inclusive, and values-driven organization where employees can thrive. Syngene’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is evident in its recognition as the #1 pharma company for women employees in Fortune India’s top 10 list, with 26% women employees, fostering a fair, high-performing, and reputable workplace. The cost incurred on well-being measures for employees amounted to 0.35% of total revenue in FY25, excluding the maternity bonus payments of Rs 3.60 Lakh.
Commitment to Transparency and Ethical Governance
Syngene upholds the highest standards of transparency and ethical business conduct, with integrity, fairness, and accountability deeply embedded in its operations. The company’s ESG performance is externally recognized, with an improved EcoVadis rating from Bronze to Silver and an MSCI ESG rating rising to ‘A,’ placing it in the leadership category. CDP scores of ‘B’ for both climate change and water security reflect solid environmental management practices. Syngene also committed to Science Based Targets (SBTi) to reduce emissions by 54.6% by FY33 and ensure 81.6% of key suppliers adopt science-based targets by FY28. The company’s Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) forms part of its Annual Report, outlining its ESG strategy and enhanced voluntary leadership disclosures to foster meaningful stakeholder engagement.
Future-Ready with Purpose
Looking ahead, Syngene is committed to deepening its impact through continuous investment in its CSR initiatives. The company’s integrated approach, combining scientific innovation with social responsibility and environmental stewardship, positions it not only as a leader in the CRDMO market but also as a model for sustainable and purpose-driven business. By innovating for greater reach and delivering breakthroughs for its clients, Syngene remains steadfast in its ultimate goal of improving human health and fostering healthier, more equitable communities globally.
