A Deep-Rooted Commitment to Social Impact

Swaraj Engines Limited operates with a core philosophy of good corporate governance, transparency, and accountability, viewing itself as a custodian and trustee for all its stakeholders: customers, business associates, shareholders, and society at large. This ethos extends profoundly into its CSR vision, which is strategically designed to foster a high social impact through targeted efforts. The company’s CSR initiatives are aligned with Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013, focusing on critical constituencies such as girls, youth, and farmers through programs in education, health, and environment.

For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, Swaraj Engines’ average net profit, as per sub-section (5) of Section 135 of the Companies Act, stood at Rs. 170.52 crores. This mandated a minimum CSR obligation of Rs. 3.41 crores (2% of the average net profit). The company, however, exceeded this obligation, spending a total of Rs. 3.46 crores on CSR projects, demonstrating its dedication beyond statutory requirements. This marks an increase from the Rs. 3.04 crores spent in the previous fiscal year. Notably, Swaraj Engines also reported an excess amount of Rs. 5.11 lakhs spent for set-off in succeeding financial years.

Empowering Through Education and Skill Development

A cornerstone of Swaraj Engines’ CSR efforts is its focus on education and vocational training. Recognizing the critical need for employable skills among the youth, the company actively imparts training through various short-term courses. In FY2025, approximately 250 students benefited from these programs at the company’s Skill Development Centre and Government ITIs, in collaboration with the State Government. Furthermore, Swaraj Engines provided diesel engines to nearby Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), enabling more than 1,000 mechanical wing students to gain invaluable practical training. This direct investment in vocational skills aims to equip young individuals with suitable earning opportunities, contributing to their economic independence and the nation’s workforce.

Advancing Public Health Initiatives

Public health remains another key area of intervention for Swaraj Engines. In a significant initiative, the company partnered with Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre to provide mammography tests to approximately 2,800 females, addressing a critical health concern in the community. Beyond this, various medical camps were organized, reaching over 3,000 people and offering essential healthcare services. The company also extended its support by providing medical equipment and materials to premier Government Institutions, further enhancing community welfare. These efforts reflect a holistic approach to improving health outcomes for the local populace.

Fostering Women Empowerment

Under its initiative named “Prerna,” Swaraj Engines is deeply committed to women empowerment. The company organized diverse training programs aimed at empowering women farmers through integrated rural development. Through support to 40 Self Help Groups (SHGs), over 740 women farmers received necessary assistance to promote innovative farm practices, knowledge, and technology. Additionally, Swaraj Engines contributed to Project Nanhi Kali, a Mahindra & Mahindra group initiative, which supports the education of underprivileged girls studying in Government schools from Class 1 to 10, enabling them to complete their schooling successfully. This dual focus on economic empowerment and educational upliftment for women showcases a comprehensive strategy for gender equality.

Nurturing a Clean Environment

Swaraj Engines’ commitment to a clean environment is evident in its continued participation in the “Swachh Bharat” (Clean India) activity. This initiative involves door-to-door garbage collection in adopted villages and cleanliness drives for public utilities. The company also actively promotes sapling plantation at various locations, contributing to green cover and environmental sustainability. This direct engagement in environmental cleanliness initiatives reflects the company’s efforts to minimize its ecological footprint and promote a healthier living environment for the communities.

Diverse Community Welfare Activities

Beyond these core pillars, Swaraj Engines undertakes a range of other activities to benefit the community. These include improvements in basic infrastructure at ITIs/Polytechnics, distribution of sanitary napkins through installed vending machines, refurbishing washrooms at nearby Government schools, and developing a sensory garden at a Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities. The company also celebrates festivals with underprivileged individuals and organizes public awareness camps for road safety and pollution, indicating a broad and inclusive approach to community welfare.

Governance and Oversight in CSR

The Corporate Social Responsibility Committee (CSR Committee) plays a pivotal role in formulating, recommending, and monitoring the CSR policy and activities. In FY2025, the committee comprised Mr. S. Nagarajan (Chairman), Mr. Harish Chavan, Ms. Smita Mankad, and Mr. Devjit Sarkar. The committee, with a Non-Executive Independent Director as its Chairman, met once during the financial year on April 10, 2024, to ensure strategic oversight and effective implementation of CSR initiatives. This robust governance structure ensures that the company’s CSR efforts are well-planned, executed, and aligned with its stated objectives and regulatory requirements.

Sustainable Operations and Future Outlook

Swaraj Engines is not only contributing to social welfare but also actively focusing on environmental sustainability within its operations. The company’s plant is certified under OHSAS 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety and EMS ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management Systems. The company continuously takes initiatives to reduce the consumption of electricity and water, achieving a 9% improvement in energy productivity and reducing water usage to 0.284 KL/Engine in FY2025. Significant investments of Rs. 15 lakhs were made in energy conservation equipment, leading to annualized savings of Rs. 25 lakhs. The plant also boasts Zero Liquid Discharge compliance, with treated water utilized for gardening and flushing.

Looking ahead, Swaraj Engines remains committed to enhancing its social responsibility initiatives. The continuous engagement with stakeholders, coupled with a robust governance framework, ensures that the company’s efforts are impactful and responsive to evolving community needs. As the company continues its growth trajectory, driven by a robust tractor industry and a record high in engine sales volume and profit in FY2025, its commitment to ethical conduct and societal betterment is poised to strengthen further. The detailed CSR spending report for FY2025 reflects not just a compliance requirement, but a profound dedication to “Rise” with society, fostering inclusive growth and equitable development for a brighter future.
