Spirited Arunima Conquers Mt. Everest

JAMSHEDPUR: In a stellar show of indomitable spirit, zeal and grit, Arunima Sinha became the first woman in the world to conquer Mt. Everest in prosthetic legs. Supported by Tata Steel Adventure Foundation, Arunima successfully climbed the highest peak in the world, today at 10.55 am with the tri-color flying high.

The achievement aptly coincides with the 60th anniversary of the first climb of the zenith of the world when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed the peak on 29th May, 1953.

Ms. Bachendri Pal, Chief, TSAF with Ms. Arunima SinhaTrained under Ms. Bachendri Pal, Chief, Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) and the first Indian woman to achieve the feat, Arunima completed her expedition journey from Kathmandu to the top of the peak in 52 days. She followed SusenMahato, another climber of Tata Steel Adventure Foundation who summited Mt. Everest on 19th May, 2013. Arunima, an Ex-volleyball player at the National level, lost both her legs in an accident.

Speaking on the amazing feat, Mr. Sunil Bhaskaran, Deputy Vice- President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel said, “We at Tata Steel salute Arunima’s courage, grit, determination and dedication that have played major role in her very special achievement. He further added, “Youth of the country will derive inspiration from the world-beaters like Arunima and Susen as they have etched their names in history for their extraordinary and brave achievements, inspite of all odds.”  

Tata Steel in its constant endeavor to promote such rare talents has supported ArunimaSinha, age 26years, in achieving her dream of scaling the Everest. Tata Steel has sponsored the expedition and provided all necessary training and mentorship for the challenging journey. Ms Bachendri Pal provided Arunima with the required training to achieve the goal of conquering the highest peak in the world. She has followed and monitored Arunima’s performance very closely and been hopeful of a landmark achievement from this young and special adventure sports enthusiast.

Ms. Bachendri Pal, Chief- TSAF in her congratulatory statement said, “We congratulate Arunima for her world record achievement and feel proud for our cadet from Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. It’s a moment of pride for the whole nation.” She also added, “The spirit, mental strength and will power of Arunima have been exemplary which was reflected in her training. She has defied all odds and will be an inspiration for millions throughout the world.”

Established in 1984, Tata Steel Adventure Foundation was established to promote adventure sports and activities among all walks of life. The objective of Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) is to imbibe the spirit of adventure through the wonders of adventure sports, thereby developing a healthy rapport with environment and nature.

The foundation, established by Tata Steel gives importance to maintaining a positive attitude in life and helps participants cultivate it through a multidisciplinary approach along with a wide range of activities. Designed for all age groups, Tata Steel Adventure Foundation has special programmes for children, youth, corporate employees and senior citizens. It has evolved the concept of utilizing benefits of adventure in everyday life to perfection and aids and encourages many forms of the sports like mountain trekking, parasailing and river rafting. In an effort to extend the benefits to the business world, TSAF has also incorporated the needs of corporate management, particularly team building. The foundation’s core strength lies in its highly capable and motivated personnel, led by renowned mountaineer Padmashree Smt. Bachendri Pal, who ensure a safe and supportive atmosphere for enthusiasts to willingly participate. They are presented with actual problems, real consequences and real constraints. In its endeavor to promote mountaineering, Tata Steel Adventure Foundation has so far provided training, mentoring and financial support for 5 expeditions to Mt. Everest along with numerous other expeditions across the continent.
