A Foundation of Care: Health Initiatives

At the heart of Shiva Cement’s community outreach is a comprehensive health program aimed at ensuring the well-being of local populations. The company’s objectives include achieving 100% institutional deliveries and immunization, working towards the elimination of Tuberculosis (TB) from the community, and providing essential medical assistance, particularly for eye disorders, and overall quality healthcare services.

Throughout FY 2024-25, the impact has been tangible. 187 TB patients in Bargaon and Kutra Block received crucial nutritional support under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. Eye care initiatives proved particularly successful, with 6,747 individuals screened and 5,996 spectacles provided, leading to 46 cataract surgeries. Beyond eye care, general health camps provided free medical treatment and medicines to 3,781 patients, while 48,876 individuals benefited from access to lab facilities at Community Health Centers (CHCs). Recognizing broader health needs, awareness sessions on electrical safety were conducted in 112 villages, and 1,850 women received personal hygiene kits as part of menstrual health and hygiene awareness programs in 21 villages.

Illuminating Minds: Education for a Brighter Tomorrow

Shiva Cement believes in nurturing the future generation through quality education. Its educational objectives are ambitious: to ensure a 0% student dropout rate, develop robust school infrastructure, improve learning outcomes, provide quality education for all, and promote the hidden talents of students.

In the past fiscal year, significant strides were made. Drinking water facilities were installed in 4 schools, and sleeping beds were provided to 3 residential schools, benefiting 455 and 260 students respectively. The company supported a district-level Kabaddi championship, engaging 1,420 students, and continued to enhance learning through Digital Boards and school bus facilities, with 120 students currently availing the bus service. A unique initiative saw the setup of kitchen gardens in 98 Anganwadi Centers, ensuring nutritious diets for 4,018 Anganwadi students. Furthermore, 146 students participated in regional environment and mineral exposure visits to the Khatkurbahal mines, offering practical learning experiences, and 127 students received spectacles from vision correction camps. The company also facilitated the mobilization of Rs 28 lakh from the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) to reward 322 meritorious HSC students from local schools.

Empowering Hands: Sustainable Livelihood Initiatives

A cornerstone of Shiva Cement’s CSR strategy is the creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities, especially for the underprivileged, and fostering economic self-reliance. This involves collaborating with the government for financial assistance and improving agricultural productivity.

The impact on livelihoods has been substantial. 398 women received vocational training in diverse fields such as tailoring, mushroom cultivation, fisheries, livestock rearing, and basket-making. In agriculture, 367 farmers (263 men and 104 women) were trained and supported in cultivating vegetables across 532 acres, leading to earnings ranging from Rs 4 lakh 30 thousand to Rs 5 lakh 70 thousand. Recognizing the importance of post-harvest management, 103 farmers began utilizing a cold storage unit, which doubled their income, yielding a collective profit of Rs 13 lakh 47 thousand. Partnerships with the Horticulture Department introduced modern polyhouse farming and drip irrigation techniques, alongside the distribution of 5,600 fruit-bearing saplings in 24 villages and the development of 4 solar irrigation structures.

A compelling example of this empowerment is Mrs. Sanchita Ekka from Telighana village. Through the company’s training and provision of high-quality agricultural inputs, she transformed into a successful agri-entrepreneur, launching a commercial vegetable farming venture on 5 acres of land. Her diversified approach, cultivating seven varieties of vegetables, significantly boosted her productivity and marketability, increasing her annual income from Rs 1 lakh 70 thousand to Rs 3 lakh 10 thousand, a testament to the program’s transformative power.

Beyond Philanthropy: Embracing Environmental Stewardship

Shiva Cement’s commitment to sustainability extends deeply into its operational practices, minimizing its environmental footprint while contributing to a circular economy. Key initiatives include:

  • Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS): The company commissioned a WHRS in mid-2023, which now meets over 55% of the plant’s power needs, preventing approximately 18,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
  • Alternative Fuels and Raw Materials (AFR): Adopting a circularity philosophy, Shiva Cement incorporates alternative raw materials like flue dust, red mud, and spent pot liner (SPL), replacing about 4% of its total raw material requirements and conserving natural resources. Its use of alternative fuels, including non-recyclable plastic waste (NRPW) and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) from municipal sources, processed 37,000 tonnes of waste in FY 2024-25, achieving a Thermal Substitution Rate (TSR) of approximately 13.5%. This transition has significantly reduced CO2 emissions by roughly 28,000 tonnes and conserved precious coal resources.
  • Plastic Negative Index & EPR Compliance: As a registered Plastic Waste Processor, the plant processed around 34,000 tonnes of plastic waste, generating about 10,000 tonnes of EPR credits and further reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 25,000 tonnes. This effort has enabled JSW Cement to achieve a plastic negative index greater than seven times.
  • Water Conservation: In FY 2024-25, Shiva Cement implemented a rainwater harvesting system with a rooftop collection and storage capacity of approximately 11,000 cubic meters, aiming to reduce reliance on freshwater sources and recharge groundwater.
  • Carbon Capture Utilisation (CCU): A pilot project in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, recently approved for a grant, will explore carbon-negative mineralization technology. This three-year pilot aims to commercialize “low carbon clinker” production, further reducing emissions.
  • Safety Excellence: The company boasts exemplary workplace safety, achieving zero fatalities and an excellent Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) in the past year.

These sustained efforts resulted in a 4% reduction in emissions intensity in FY 2024-25 compared to the previous fiscal year.

Outlook: Sustaining Growth with Purpose

Shiva Cement Limited, while navigating a challenging economic landscape in FY 2024-25, remains optimistic about its future, emphasizing cost leadership, sustainability, and operational excellence. The company’s strategic initiatives, including its 1 MTPA grinding unit project nearing completion in Sambalpur, Odisha, and targeting commissioning by the first half of FY26, will enhance its integrated supply chain and clinker utilization, positioning it to meet growing cement demand.

By deeply embedding social and environmental responsibility into its core values and operations, Shiva Cement exemplifies how businesses can contribute significantly to national development, aligning with India’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision by 2047. Its ongoing commitment to community empowerment and environmental protection demonstrates a clear path towards a stronger, more efficient, and truly sustainable future.
