Vision impairment and preventable blindness remain significant public health concerns in India.
NEW DELHI (India CSR): In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in eastern India, Bihar has attracted a major CSR initiative in the eye care sector, with REC Limited committing support to strengthen facilities at Sankara Eye Hospital in Saharsa.
REC Limited has committed Rs, 11.56 crore under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative for the procurement of clinical and non-clinical equipment for the hospital. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the hospital’s ability to provide specialized eye care services to patients from economically weaker sections.
By investing in specialized medical infrastructure, REC Limited aims to create sustainable healthcare solutions that deliver long-term benefits to communities.
Access to quality eye care remains a major challenge in many rural regions of India. In Bihar’s Saharsa district and its surrounding areas, thousands of people struggle to receive timely diagnosis and treatment for preventable blindness and other vision-related disorders. Recognizing this critical need, REC Limited has stepped forward with a significant CSR investment to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve eye care services for underserved communities.
Strengthening Eye Care Infrastructure
The CSR project focuses on equipping Sankara Eye Hospital with advanced clinical and non-clinical equipment, enabling the hospital to expand its treatment capacity and improve the quality of medical services offered.
These resources will help the hospital provide timely diagnosis, advanced treatment, and surgical care for various eye-related conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, and other vision impairments. By strengthening the hospital’s infrastructure, the initiative will enable medical teams to treat a larger number of patients efficiently while maintaining high standards of care.
Formalizing the Partnership
The collaboration between REC Limited and Sankara Eye Hospital was formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed on March 9, 2026. The agreement was signed at the REC Limited office located in the SCOPE Complex, New Delhi. The MoA was signed between:
- Pradeep Fellows, Executive Director (CSR), REC Limited
- Wg Cdr V. Shankar (Retd), Trustee & Executive Director, Sankara Eye Hospital
This partnership marks an important step in leveraging corporate resources to strengthen healthcare delivery systems in underserved regions.
Expanding Access to Quality Eye Care
The project is expected to benefit thousands of people in Saharsa and surrounding districts of Bihar, many of whom have limited access to specialized medical facilities. Rural and economically weaker communities often face barriers such as long travel distances, limited availability of specialists, and financial constraints. By upgrading hospital facilities and equipment, the initiative will help bring high-quality eye care services closer to these communities. This will ensure that patients receive timely diagnosis, treatment, and surgical interventions, reducing the risk of preventable blindness and vision loss.
Supporting the Economically Weaker Sections
A key focus of the initiative is to support patients from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who often delay treatment due to cost concerns. With improved infrastructure and expanded capacity, Sankara Eye Hospital will be able to provide affordable or subsidized treatment to those who need it most. Such initiatives play an important role in addressing health inequalities and ensuring that quality healthcare is not limited by socio-economic conditions.
Advancing REC Limited’s CSR Vision
REC Limited has been actively involved in supporting healthcare, education, rural development, and community welfare initiatives through its CSR programs across India. The partnership with Sankara Eye Hospital reflects the organization’s broader commitment to strengthening public healthcare infrastructure, particularly in underserved and remote regions. By investing in specialized medical infrastructure, REC Limited aims to create sustainable healthcare solutions that deliver long-term benefits to communities.
Creating Lasting Social Impact
Vision impairment and preventable blindness remain significant public health concerns in India. Initiatives that focus on improving healthcare infrastructure and accessibility can transform lives by restoring vision and enabling individuals to lead productive lives. Through this CSR initiative, REC Limited is not only strengthening medical infrastructure but also bringing hope and better health outcomes to thousands of families in Bihar. As Sankara Eye Hospital expands its capacity to serve more patients, the initiative stands as an example of how corporate partnerships can create meaningful and lasting social impact in the healthcare sector.
