The Prime Minister Internship Scheme is gaining significant traction, with major corporations participating in an effort to support young talent across the country. Companies like Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, ONGC, and Maruti Suzuki India are all part of this ambitious initiative. The scheme aims to create ten million internship opportunities over five years, and the government is already on track to surpass its initial target of 125,000 internships by December 2.
Corporate Support for Youth Employment
The internship program is receiving enthusiastic support from the corporate sector. Companies have posted internship offers for over 90,800 candidates, which is a significant jump from just 16,000 in early October. Many more companies are in the process of uploading their offers on the scheme’s official portal.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), which is implementing the program, has asked companies to submit their internship details from October 3 onwards. “We are witnessing tremendous interest from large companies who are committed to supporting young people in building skills and gaining work experience,” said an MCA official.
How the Internship Scheme Works
The portal for the PM Internship Scheme opened for students on October 12, and applications are being accepted until October 25. By December 2, successful candidates will begin their internships with participating companies. “The enthusiasm among students is palpable. Many are eager to gain experience with some of India’s biggest brands,” said a senior official. Companies participating include Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, Tech Mahindra, Alembic Pharmaceuticals, Max Life Insurance, Jubilant Foodworks, Eicher Motor, and Muthoot Finance.
Pilot Phase and Future Expansion
The pilot phase of the internship scheme is designed to provide internships to 125,000 candidates. The MCA plans to expand the program further based on the experiences gained during the initial rollout. “We are confident that the PM Internship Scheme will transform how young people enter the workforce in India,” said the official.
The government’s ultimate goal is to provide ten million internships over a five-year period, with more than 500 companies participating. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has also held consultations with the MCA to ensure that industry requirements are met and that the scheme provides real value to both interns and participating companies.
Funding and Financial Assistance
The internship opportunities are available across more than 20 sectors, including energy, automotive, banking, hospitality, infrastructure, and more. Each selected intern will receive a monthly allowance of Rs. 5000 for one year, as well as a one-time aid of ₹6000. “The government is investing heavily to ensure that the interns are well-compensated and gain valuable experience,” said an MCA spokesperson. The government will cover Rs. 54,000 per intern, while the participating companies will bear the training costs and 10% of the monthly allowance, amounting to ₹6000 from their CSR funds.
CSR spending: Focus on Economically Weaker Sections
The PM Internship Scheme aims to provide opportunities to youth from economically weaker households, specifically those whose families earn less than Rs. 8 lakh per year. “The program is designed to reach those who need it the most, providing a bridge from education to employment,” said a ministry representative. The participating companies are selected based on their average CSR spending over the last three years.
The internship opportunities are available in various states and union territories, ensuring that candidates from across the country can benefit. “This initiative isn’t just for metro cities; we’re extending opportunities to tier 2 and tier 3 cities, where young people often struggle to find meaningful work experiences,” said an official from Reliance Industries.
Creating Career Opportunities Across Industries
Companies are offering internships in sectors as diverse as oil and gas, aviation, construction, banking, and travel. Many students are excited by the variety of roles available. “Internships are a stepping stone to a successful career, and we want to make sure that young people have every opportunity to learn and grow,” said an official from Tata Consultancy Services.
“We believe that every company has a role to play in building the nation’s future. By participating in this scheme, we are helping nurture the next generation of leaders,” said a spokesperson from HDFC Bank.
The Road Ahead
The PM Internship Scheme is off to a promising start, and officials are optimistic about its potential impact. As the initiative rolls out, both companies and young professionals are expected to benefit. “This scheme will bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements, equipping young people with skills that employers are looking for,” said a ministry official.
The government and industry leaders see this as just the beginning. The initial success of the PM Internship Scheme will pave the way for expanding internship opportunities, with an eye towards making the Indian workforce more skilled and ready for the future. With more companies likely to join in, the goal of offering ten million internships may very well be within reach.
The internship scheme aims not only to provide skills but also to uplift entire communities by giving economically disadvantaged youth a fighting chance at a better future. “We are hopeful that this scheme will create a ripple effect, improving not just individual lives but the nation as a whole,” said a ministry spokesperson.
