Onam 2023: A Celebration of Kerala’s Culture and Heritage

Onam 2023: Onam is a major festival celebrated by the people of Kerala, India. It is a harvest festival that marks the annual visit of King Mahabali, a benevolent ruler who was sent to the underworld by Lord Vishnu. Onam is also a time to express gratitude to nature for the bountiful crops and to enjoy the cultural heritage of Kerala. Onam 2023 will begin on August 20 and end on August 31, with the most important day being Thiruvonam on August 29.

Onam Date and Time

Onam is celebrated for ten days in the month of Chingam, which corresponds to August-September in the Gregorian calendar. The first day of Onam is called Atham and the tenth day is called Thiruvonam. Each day has its own significance and rituals. The date and time of Thiruvonam, the main day of Onam, are determined by the Thiruvonam Nakshatra, which is the birth star of King Mahabali. According to Drik Panchang, the Thiruvonam Nakshatra will begin on August 29, 2023 at 2:43 AM and end on August 30, 2023 at 11:50 PM.

Onam Story

The story behind Onam is based on the legend of King Mahabali, also known as Maveli or Bali. He was a generous and righteous king who ruled over the three worlds: earth, heaven and netherworld. He was so popular and powerful that even the gods felt threatened by him. They approached Lord Vishnu for help and he agreed to curb Mahabali’s pride. Vishnu took the form of a dwarf Brahmin named Vamana and visited Mahabali during his yagna (sacrifice). He asked Mahabali for three steps of land as a gift. Mahabali agreed without hesitation, despite his guru Shukracharya’s warning that Vamana was Vishnu in disguise.

Vamana then expanded his size and covered the earth and heaven with his first two steps. He asked Mahabali where he should place his third step. Mahabali realized his folly and offered his head as the only place left for Vamana to step on. Vamana placed his foot on Mahabali’s head and pushed him down to the netherworld. However, Vishnu was pleased with Mahabali’s devotion and generosity and granted him a boon. Mahabali asked for permission to visit his people once a year. Vishnu agreed and also promised to be his guardian in the netherworld. Thus, Onam is celebrated as the homecoming of Mahabali to Kerala every year.
