The pilot project operates on an innovative eco friendly, energy efficient, low cost thin-client based technology

NOIDA: Moser Baer Trust (MBT) has inaugurated its first digital learning centre, based on the innovative thin client technology, at village Nagla, sector 80, Noida. The adoption of thin client technology is an eco-friendly initiative which aims to bring in not only energy efficiency and economies of scale but also inclusion of a larger section of target audience.

The centre, inaugurated by Nita Puri, Director- HR, Moser Baer India Ltd, is supported by NASSCOM Foundation with content and certification. This is the 8th computer centre to be opened by MBT in the rural and semi-urban areas in and around Noida/ Greater Noida .

Speaking on the inauguration, Nita Puri, Director- HR, Moser Baer India Ltd, “Amongst the myriad initiatives of Moser Baer Trust, digital literacy upholds great importance as we feel that to be digitally empowered is an imperative need for the youth residing in rural and semi-urban areas. MBT will be replicating this model in its other existing centres and is also keen to create strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations to collectively increase the outreach and impact of digital literacy in rural areas.”

A thin client is a network computer without a hard disk drive. The centre has 10 thin clients systems in place connected to a single server. This new model has resulted into considerable space saving, leading to installation of more number of LCD monitors. It means that more number of students will now be able to study at the centre as compared to the other centres run by MBT.In the current financial year, around 150 students will gain knowledge of basic computer skills, accounting, DTP and internet applications at the centre.

According to Ranu Kulshrestha, Group Head- CSR, Moser Baer, “We are grateful to NASSCOM Foundation for helping us with an industry supported curriculum framework and certification. This is one of its-kind eco-friendly initiative taken up by MBT towards bringing energy-efficiency and economies of scale. Based on the per day consumption of electricity, the centre is 70% more energy efficient than any computer lab with the same number of computers thus making it eco-friendly owing to reduction in the carbon footprint. Additionally, the annual maintenance cost will come down significantly – 57 % lesser than what is incurred in a standard computer centre.”

The event witnessed felicitation of 162 students by Mrs. Nita Puri in the convocation ceremony. She also presented certificates to 26 students of Taleem (MBT’s Non formal literacy programme looking after to the educational needs of more than 450 girls). A theatre performance by MBT’s children, who have recently been trained by National School of Drama, was appreciated by the audience.

MBT has been actively contributing towards the quality and availability of digital learning infrastructure in the region in a sustainable manner. Earlier also, it had opened a computer centre at Surajpur, Noida with roof-top solar panels as source of electricity.  The centres are being run in collaboration with schools and Panchayats of NOIDA and Greater NOIDA under its Digital Literacy Program. The program encourages schools to include digital literacy in their curriculum for a better outreach. NASSCOM Foundation is contributing to further strengthen this initiative and expand its outreach. Till date, a total of 4310 children have been trained.
