KOCHI (India CSR): In a bustling city like Kochi, where civic governance directly impacts the lives of thousands, transparency in financial dealings is paramount. Recently, opposition councillors have stirred the pot, accusing the Kochi Corporation of potentially diverting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds meant for public welfare. The allegations, centered around the local body’s revised budget for 2024-25, have sparked a heated debate, raising questions about accountability and fiscal integrity. With residents eager for clarity, this unfolding story highlights the critical role of trust between authorities and the people they serve.
Suspicion Over Missing CSR Income
According to the revised budget for 2024-25, the Kochi Corporation reported zero income from CSR contributions—a stark contrast to the Rs 11 crore it received from various companies in the 2023-24 fiscal year. Opposition leader Antony Kureethra has flagged this discrepancy, questioning how the corporation could fail to record any CSR funds this year while simultaneously projecting Rs 25 lakh in CSR income for the 2025-26 budget. “This inconsistency suggests something isn’t right,” Kureethra told reporters on March 27, 2025. “If no funds came in last year, how can they confidently expect them next year?”
Evidence of CSR Utilization
Adding fuel to the opposition’s claims, several projects funded by CSR contributions appear to contradict the budget’s claims. For instance, the corporation recently acquired a state-of-the-art food testing laboratory costing Rs 40 lakh, funded through the ICCI Foundation’s CSR initiative. Additionally, multiple Material Collection Facilities (MCFs) across the city were established using CSR donations. “These projects are tangible proof that CSR money flowed in,” Kureethra argued. “So why does the revised budget show nothing? Where did the money go?”
Calls for Transparency and Accountability
The opposition’s allegations have ignited demands for a thorough investigation into the corporation’s financial practices. Local activists and residents alike are pressing for detailed disclosures about the total CSR funds received in 2024-25 and their utilization. “This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about the welfare projects these funds were meant to support,” said Priya Menon, a Kochi-based social worker. With the city facing challenges like waste management and public health, any diversion of resources could have a ripple effect on community well-being.
What Lies Ahead for Kochi Corporation?
As the controversy gains traction, the corporation authorities have yet to issue an official response. However, the pressure is mounting for them to address these allegations head-on. Experts suggest that an independent audit could restore public confidence, while others speculate that political tensions may escalate ahead of upcoming local elections. For now, Kochi’s residents are left wondering whether their civic body’s financial stewardship aligns with its promises.
