The distribution of this consolidated CSR spend across various thematic areas highlights JSW Energy’s holistic approach: Rs 6.59 crore was dedicated to educational infrastructure and systems strengthening, Rs 7.95 crore towards enhancing skills and rural livelihoods, and Rs 5.38 crore for general community infrastructure and welfare initiatives. Significant investments were also made in integrated water resources management (Rs 7.21 crore), public health infrastructure and programs (Rs 4.76 crore), sports promotion and institution building (Rs 1.79 crore), and waste management and sanitation (Rs 0.27 crore).

Championing Education and Skill Development

Education remains a cornerstone of JSW Energy’s CSR efforts. Through the JSW Udaan Scholarship, the company provided financial assistance totaling Rs 2.94 crore to 1,017 deserving students in FY 2025, empowering them to pursue their academic and personal aspirations. This initiative goes beyond financial aid, aiming to foster academic excellence and personal growth. Furthermore, the Jindal Education Trust, which has received ISO 9001:2000 certification, actively supports educational endeavors, contributing to the development of future leaders.

In skill development, Project Charkha stands out, having trained over 500 women in producing handicrafts. The Vocational Centre at the Barmer Plant also plays a crucial role in equipping individuals with market-relevant skills. These programs are vital in enhancing rural livelihoods and fostering economic independence at the grassroots level.

Transforming Healthcare Access

JSW Energy is deeply committed to improving community health, particularly in remote areas. JSW Hydro Energy organized two Multi-Specialty Medical Camps in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, serving nearly 3,000 patients with free consultations and diagnostics. An Eye Screening Camp benefited 400 people, and a critical initiative involved distributing 327 nutrition baskets monthly to tuberculosis (TB) patients under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, supporting the nation’s TB elimination efforts. The Urja Community Clinic and ambulance services further extended care to over 12,000 individuals, underscoring a strong focus on preventive care and outreach.

Pioneering Environmental Stewardship

Minimizing environmental footprint is a core priority for JSW Energy. The company’s environmental initiatives are multi-faceted, focusing on increasing green cover, efficient water management, and advanced waste management. in FY 2025 alone, 34,859 saplings were planted across various locations, including 3,050 at JSWHEL Sholtu, 24,091 at JSW Energy Utkal thermal power plant, and thousands more at Barmer, Ratnagiri, Vijayanagar, and Nandyal plants. These plantation drives contribute to revitalizing ecosystems and combating climate change.

Water management is another critical area, with JSW Energy maintaining a “Zero Liquid Discharge” policy across all its thermal power plants, where treated wastewater is recycled for operational processes or horticulture. The Barmer plant achieved “Water Neutrality Aspiring” certification, with plans to roll out similar assessments across all thermal plants to minimize consumption and move towards “Water Positivity”. Rainwater harvesting systems are also implemented, with approximately 40,13,965 cubic meters of water recycled and reused in FY 2025.

In waste management, JSW Energy boasts 100% fly ash utilization, supplying it to cement manufacturers and construction companies. The company’s innovative approach extends to converting hazardous waste into energy; for example, JSW Neo Energy recovered 204.41 Giga Joules (GJ) of energy from 9.63 tons of oil-soaked cotton waste through co-processing in cement kilns, preventing 27.05 tons of CO2e emissions and eliminating landfill dependency. This commitment to circularity is further demonstrated by the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) certification achieved by the Barmer, Ratnagiri, and Vijayanagar thermal power plants in FY 2025.

Empowering Rural Communities through Infrastructure

JSW Energy’s commitment to community development includes enhancing local infrastructure. In FY 2024-25, JSW Hydro Energy undertook projects such as building ambulance roads, public toilets, mortuary sheds, and rain shelters. They also installed 82 park benches, high mast lights, upgraded roads, parking areas, and community halls, and enhanced security with CCTV systems, fostering a sense of pride and well-being among residents. A 1.2 km road was constructed in Ratnagiri to provide easy access for neighboring communities, particularly farmers.

Strategic Vision for Sustainable Impact

JSW Energy’s CSR initiatives are deeply integrated with its broader vision to be a leader in India’s energy transition and to become carbon neutral by 2050. The company aims to achieve a 48% reduction in carbon footprint by 2030 (from a 2020 base). This vision is supported by prudent capital allocation and a resilient business model. Efforts to scale up renewable energy capacity to 30 GW by 2030, with 70% renewable power, are central to this strategy. The company’s focus on innovative green technologies, such as the Green Hydrogen Optimization Engine, which helps in efficient investment planning for clean hydrogen projects, underscores its commitment to decarbonization.

Governance and Accountability

JSW Energy maintains a robust governance framework for its CSR activities. The CSR Committee, overseen by the Board of Directors, ensures thoughtful planning and responsible execution of initiatives, aligning them with the company’s long-term vision. Transparency is a cornerstone, with the company adhering to international frameworks like the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) Framework for comprehensive disclosures. Performance reviews are conducted monthly, enabling rapid identification of areas for corrective action and sustained operational excellence. The Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR), externally assured by Bureau Veritas (India) Pvt. Ltd., further underscores this commitment to transparency and accountability.

Looking Ahead

As JSW Energy continues its journey, it remains committed to expanding its positive societal and environmental impact. Future efforts will concentrate on accelerating the deployment of carbon-reducing technologies, increasing the share of renewables in the energy mix, and investing further in green hydrogen, carbon capture, and energy efficiency solutions. By actively engaging with stakeholders and adapting to evolving needs, JSW Energy is not just meeting its CSR obligations but striving to set new benchmarks for responsible and sustainable business practices in the Indian energy sector.
