NEW DELHI (India CSR): A 52-year-old man from Hyderabad recently fell victim to an elaborate online trading scam, losing INR 1.22 crore. However, thanks to the swift action of the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police, INR 1.05 crore was recovered and returned to him. The incident highlights the importance of vigilance in the face of online scams and showcases the effectiveness of prompt law enforcement intervention.
Victim Lured by Promises of High Returns
The private employee from Hyderabad was drawn into a fraudulent trading scheme when scammers, posing as investment experts, persuaded him to invest in a fake platform, promising high returns. Eager for the financial gains, the man transferred Rs 1,22,26,205 to accounts set up by the scammers. It was only later, when no returns materialized, that he realized he had been defrauded and approached the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police.
Police’s Swift Action Leads to Major Recovery
After receiving the complaint, the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police registered a case and immediately contacted bank officials to freeze the accounts associated with the fraud. The police also guided the victim through the legal process, helping him file a court petition to retrieve his money. Thanks to these actions, the court issued an order directing the return of Rs 1.05 crore, which was subsequently credited back to the victim’s account.
Police Warn of Scams Promising Unrealistic Returns
In light of the growing number of online scams, the Hyderabad Police have issued a public advisory urging citizens to exercise caution with investment advertisements on social media platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Many fraudulent schemes promise unrealistic returns with minimal risk, preying on individuals’ desires for quick profits. The police emphasized that legitimate investments do not offer guaranteed high returns without risk, and warned against transferring funds to unfamiliar or unverified sources.
Cyber Crime Helpline for Reporting Fraud
The Hyderabad Police encourage anyone who suspects they may be a victim of cyber fraud to report it immediately. Victims can dial the cyber crime helpline number, 1930, or visit the official cyber crime reporting portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Prompt reporting increases the likelihood of fund recovery, as swift action can prevent scammers from moving the funds out of reach.
This case serves as a reminder of the growing sophistication of online scams and the need for both vigilance by individuals and rapid intervention by authorities. Through awareness and timely reporting, more victims can be spared from financial loss and online fraud.
