An average person spends 1.4 hours per day (or 9.3 to 10.6 hours per week) in a car whether commuting to work or just driving to grab groceries. The time increases if you are heading out on long drives or road trips. But if you spend so much time in your car, have you ever stopped to think about how safe your driving habits actually are?

A car might be a machine, but it’s in our hands to make sure that every drive is smooth and secure. So, here are seven lifesaving tips to ensure your rides are as safe as they are enjoyable.

1.  Maintain Your Vehicle Properly

A happy car is a safe car, so make sure your vehicle is properly maintained. Regular maintenance ensures everything is functioning as it should. It is very similar to taking your car in for a checkup.

Keeping track of the oil levels, brake pads, and tire pressure are easy ways to avoid a lot of problems later on. Therefore, don’t neglect routine examinations. If you take good care of your car, it will return the favor.

2. Always Use Safety Belts

The importance of wearing a seatbelt cannot be overstated, even though you’ve heard it a million times. The safety belts are superheroes of car safety. Buckling up can make the difference between escaping an accident and not, even if you’re simply going to the corner store. In 2022, India Today reports claimed that 16,715 people lost their lives in road accidents due to not wearing seatbelts.

Remember these safety devices – they’re crucial for you and anyone riding with you. Buckle up in the car, no matter where you sit.

3. Don’t Drink & Drive

This one should go without saying: driving after drinking is strictly prohibited. Alcohol not only slows down your reaction time but also distorts your judgment, leading you to believe you’re driving safely when you’re actually the danger on the road. As per the data released by Millennium Post, 3,268 accidents and 1,503 deaths were registered in 2022 due to drunk driving.

So, if you’ve had too much to drink, stay away from the wheel. Instead, pick a sober friend to take the charge, hail a taxi, or book a ride back home. This isn’tjust about keeping yourself safe; it’s about protecting everyone else on the streets too.

4. Always Stay Alert

Even if you’re the most careful driver on the road, you need to keep your eyes peeled for everyone else around you. No matter how cautious you are, other drivers might not follow the rules. Riding too close, braking, weaving through traffic, or turning without signals – bad driving habits are everywhere. The trick is to always expect other drivers to make mistakes, so you can be prepared. But how?

Look far ahead while you drive. Don’t just focus on the car directly in front of you. Remove or turn off any attention-grabbing accessory and go for compact car dashboard accessories that do not take your mind off the road and fit well with your car decor. By scanning the road about half to a full mile ahead, you’ll give yourself more time to respond to any sudden changes.

5. Do not Use Phones While Driving

Our phones have become an important part of our lives but while you’re driving, please put them aside. It is extremely unsafe to text, check your GPS, or browse social media while operating a motor vehicle. It only takes a moment of distracted driving to cause a collision, making it one of the main causes of accidents. According to a road safety charity, using a phone while driving increases your risk of getting into an accident by four times. So, wait till you reach your destination or stop at the side of the road before using them.

6. Drive Safely in Poor Conditions

Bad weather, dirt roads, mountain areas, or similar situations can turn even the simplest drives into a dangerous task. Whether it’s pouring rain, thick fog, or icy roads, make sure you’re taking extra precautions when conditions get tricky. Make sure to drive slowly in such situations and give more room between the vehicles in front of you.In fog, turn on your headlights, but not the high beams.

What if you’re not sure? Stop and bide your time until the weather improves. Arriving late is preferable to not showing up at all.

7. Spiritual Tips: Balance Your Inner Calm for a Safer Drive

Sometimes driving can get stressful, especially in heavy traffic or in unpredictable weather. In this case, you can keep a spiritual accent on the dashboard that calms you down and fills you with inner peace. You can also wear an original Rudraksha Mala which is said to create a shield against negative energies, supporting health and inner strength. This can actually make driving a pleasure rather than a stressful chore that you have to go through.

Final Thoughts

Although the road can be a dangerous place, you can ensure that every trip you take is safe by following these seven tips. You, your passengers, and everyone else on the road can avoid danger with a little upkeep, concentration, and mindfulness. So, buckle up, stay sharp, and most importantly, enjoy the ride.
