How India Is Embracing Digital Entertainment Across Generations
Share Share Share Share

Over the past two decades, there has been a significant transformation in how digital entertainment is enjoyed in India. Easy access to affordable smartphones, coupled with investment in internet infrastructure, means that India is well-connected to the digital universe. Increased connectivity has impacted how individuals of all generations embrace this new trend that has swept across the country. The different age groups across India enjoy different types of digital entertainment, such as gaming, social media, online news, and connecting with online communities that are aligned with their interests.

COVID-19 was one of the key drivers that helped digital entertainment become mainstream in India. Lockdown meant that there was no access to physical forms of entertainment, and people had to find alternative entertainment at home. There was a massive increase in online activity, and even the older generations became more internet savvy. Post-COVID, this trend has continued and digital activities from online shopping to gaming and everything in between are the norm. Individuals enjoy the easy accessibility and convenience that digital connectivity offers.

From Teens to Seniors Everyone Is Exploring Different Digital Platforms

Millennials and Gen Z share many common interests in their digital entertainment choices:

Gen Z was born between 1997 to 2012 and arrived into a world that was already feeling the impact of the internet boom. They grew up with mobile phones that evolved into smartphones, as well as online-first apps. The majority of them would have been unable to remember life without digital connectivity. This group is deeply connected to brands and makes most of their choices based on influencers on platforms like TikTok. They enjoy short-form video content that is under sixty seconds in length, and frequent YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Many engage in online education with platforms that offer online classes. They use WhatsApp and Snapchat to communicate with friends and family, and create online communities for work and common interests using these apps.

Millennials who were born between 1981 and 1996 and most of them grew up in an environment where digital technology was just beginning to develop. These two groups probably have the most in common when it comes to digital habits online. These two age groups use WhatsApp to create groups for family, work, and communities that are aligned around their interests. Millennials frequent platforms. Many engage in freelance work on platforms such as Upwork and use online dating apps to find companionship, as well as looking for new employment and networking with LinkedIn. Social media is accessed through platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.

Gen X (mid-1960s to the early 1980s) were born as the analogue era began to be replaced with digital innovations that quickly became mainstream. They experienced the early versions of video games and gaming consoles, as well as the arrival of personal computers in their homes. The internet, mobile phones, the World Wide Web, smartphones, and apps followed this. They have experienced the technological digital revolution that has occurred throughout the course of their lives. that feature themes around personal wellness, parenting, online shopping, UPI payments, and consuming news on apps. Social media is accessed through Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn.

Baby Boomers (1946-1964) have experienced the biggest digital transformation of all age groups as they grew up in the pre-digital era with computers that were the size of their homes and could only be accessed by scientists or innovators within a specific setting. Aged between 60 and 79, this generation has seen the most change but has adapted remarkably well to a digital lifestyle.

In general, Baby Boomers enjoy OTT (over-the-top services), which are delivered via the internet at the same time that the event is taking place. They are more inclined to enjoy digital versions of the traditional offline media that they enjoyed before the internet, with a preference to entertainment that is connected to the television more than using social media channels.

They enjoy connecting with family and friends through video calls, learning new tech skills often with the help of their children and grandchildren, content related to health, and videos with devotional or spiritual themes. The social media platforms most commonly used by this age group are Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube.

Several Forms of Digital Entertainment Are Popular Across All Age Groups

OTT (Entertainment for all) which includes Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar, JioCinema, Zee5 and Disney+ are the most popular platforms and are used by all age groups. These channels offer entertainment that is relevant to a wide audience and are available on smart TVs and mobile devices making them easily accessible.

Online Games that range from free casual offerings to highly competitive ones are very popular. The older generation opts for free puzzle and card games like Candy Crush or Sudoku. Teenagers are actively engaged in competitive gaming and streaming, while middle-aged adults enjoy casual gaming as a way to relieve stress.

Learning apps have opened a whole new universe where users can easily learn new skills at their convenience. Students use learning apps to prepare for their exams, while working professionals often take courses to learn new skills so that they can advance in their careers. Seniors enjoy lifelong learning, learning a new language, and spiritual courses.

Online casinos are becoming popular among adults (18+). Teen Patti, Rummy, Poker, and Fantasy Sports are the most commonly enjoyed games. Online gambling platforms are strictly regulated and offer a wide variety of casino games as well as online sports betting that can all be played for real money. The thrill of winning real money and the convenience of these platforms offer an exciting gaming experience for Indian players, and the security and convenience that they offer have created a trusting and loyal following
