From an “old plant” with low expectations to a global mining leader, the company’s transformation is now a major story of jobs, growth, and national contribution.
UDAIPUR: Hindustan Zinc today stands as the world’s largest supplier of zinc, marking one of India’s most remarkable industrial transformation stories. What was once seen as an ageing, slow-moving plant—burdened by outdated systems and limited ambition—has now become a symbol of scale, efficiency, and global competitiveness.
When the journey began, many believed the operation had little future. Decisions were slow, expectations were low, and modernization seemed like a distant dream. Yet, there was one strength that never faded: the people.
Rajasthan, a land known for producing legends like Maharana Pratap and Mirabai, has long represented resilience, courage, and pride. That same spirit, leaders say, became the foundation of Hindustan Zinc’s turnaround. Workers across the state brought deep skill, commitment, and an unmatched work ethic—qualities that proved stronger than any outdated machinery or legacy challenge.
By staying close to the ground, listening carefully, and trusting the workforce, Hindustan Zinc began rebuilding itself from within. The transformation has been dramatic: over one lakh jobs created and production scaled nearly tenfold over the years. Today, the company contributes nearly 75% of India’s zinc output, strengthening the nation’s domestic metal supply chain and reducing reliance on imports.
The growth story is not limited to zinc. India once produced virtually no silver at scale, but Hindustan Zinc now produces hundreds of tonnes of silver annually, adding another dimension to its global standing and making Rajasthan a key contributor to India’s mineral wealth.
The economic impact has also been significant. In the last year alone, the company contributed nearly Rs 20,000 crore to the public exchequer, including Rs 3,600 crore in dividends to the Government of India. That translates to almost Rs 55 crore every single day flowing back into the nation’s development and welfare priorities.
Beyond the numbers, Hindustan Zinc’s rise is being viewed as a story of Rajasthan’s people—their grit, pride, and ability to turn a struggling legacy asset into a world-leading enterprise.
And for those watching India’s industrial future, this is not the end of the story. As Hindustan Zinc continues expanding its capabilities, Rajasthan’s workforce remains at the heart of what comes next.
