Local Wildlife Enthusiast Bhupinder Singh’s Daring Effort to Save Trapped Bird Garners Widespread Admiration
SHIMLA (India CSR): In a remarkable display of bravery and compassion, Bhupinder Singh, a dedicated wildlife enthusiast from Paonta Sahib, Himachal Pradesh, undertook a daring rescue to save an Indian Grey Hornbill ensnared atop a towering 100-foot Semal tree.
The bird had become entangled in a kite string, rendering it unable to free itself. Undeterred by the height and potential danger, Bhupinder employed a Hydra crane—a piece of heavy machinery—to ascend the massive tree and reach the distressed bird.
The Semal tree, also known as the silk cotton tree or Bombax Ceiba, is native to India and renowned for its considerable height and rapid growth. Climbing such a tree is no small feat, but Bhupinder’s determination to save the trapped Grey Hornbill propelled him upward. As he reached the entangled bird, onlookers gathered below, watching with bated breath. Their anxiety turned to applause as Bhupinder carefully freed the bird and brought it safely back to the ground.
The entire rescue was captured on video, highlighting not only Bhupinder’s heroic efforts but also the community’s support and admiration. The footage has since circulated widely, serving as a poignant reminder of the impact one individual can have on wildlife conservation.
Tragically, despite Bhupinder’s swift actions, the Indian Grey Hornbill Bird succumbed to its injuries during treatment at the local veterinary hospital. The bird had sustained severe wounds from the kite string entanglement, which ultimately proved fatal. Bhupinder, deeply affected by the loss, ensured the bird was given a respectful burial.
This incident underscores several key themes: the importance of innovative problem-solving in rescue operations, the role of passionate individuals in wildlife conservation, and the power of community support. Bhupinder’s actions exemplify how dedication and compassion can lead to extraordinary outcomes, inspiring others to take active roles in protecting and preserving our natural world.

The Indian Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros birostris)
The Indian Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros birostris) is a medium-sized bird native to the Indian subcontinent, including India, Pakistan, and Nepal. Measuring approximately 61 cm (24 inches) in length, it features a greyish-brown plumage with a lighter grey or dull white belly. Its distinctive black or dark grey bill is topped with a short, pointed casque, more prominent in males. The species is commonly found in pairs and is one of the few hornbills that have adapted well to urban environments, often seen in cities with large trees .
Primarily arboreal, the Indian Grey Hornbill feeds on a varied diet that includes fruits—especially figs—along with insects, small reptiles, rodents, and even the nestlings of other birds. Its feeding habits play a crucial role in seed dispersal, aiding in forest regeneration. The bird’s call is a distinctive squeal, reminiscent of a black kite, and its flight pattern involves heavy flapping interspersed with glide.

Breeding typically occurs from April to June. The female nests in tree cavities, sealing herself inside with a mixture of mud and droppings, leaving only a narrow slit through which the male feeds her. She remains sealed in until the chicks are ready to fledge, during which time she undergoes a complete molt Birda.
Despite its adaptability, the Indian Grey Hornbill faces threats from habitat loss due to urbanization and deforestation. Conservation efforts are essential to ensure the survival of this species, which holds ecological significance as a seed disperser and cultural importance in various Indian traditions.
