Ganesh Chaturthi 2023 Date and Shubh Muhurat
According to the Drik Panchang, Ganesh Chaturthi 2023 will begin at 12:39 pm on Monday, September 18 and end at 01:43 pm on Tuesday, September 19. The Madhyahna Ganesha Puja Muhurat will be from 11:01 am to 01:28 pm on September 19. The duration of the puja will be 02 hours and 27 minutes.
Ganesh Chaturthi History and Significance
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati from the dirt of her body. She asked him to guard the door while she was taking a bath. When Lord Shiva came back, he was stopped by Ganesha who did not recognize him. Enraged by this, Shiva cut off Ganesha’s head with his trident. Parvati was heartbroken and demanded that Shiva bring her son back to life. Shiva then replaced Ganesha’s head with that of an elephant and revived him. He also declared that Ganesha would be the first god to be worshipped before any other deity.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated to commemorate this event and to honour Lord Ganesha’s attributes of wisdom, success and good fortune. It is believed that worshipping Lord Ganesha removes all obstacles and grants the wishes of the devotees.
Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations and Rituals
The celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi begin with the installation of clay idols of Lord Ganesha in homes or public pandals. The idols are decorated with flowers, garlands, jewellery and other accessories. The idols are worshipped with various offerings such as modak (a sweet dumpling), coconut, jaggery, fruits and flowers. The devotees also chant mantras, sing bhajans and perform aarti (a ritual of waving lamps) in honour of Lord Ganesha.
The idols are kept for one-and-a-half, three, five, seven or ten days depending on the tradition and preference of the devotees. On the last day, the idols are taken out in processions accompanied by music, dance and slogans of “Ganpati Bappa Morya”. The idols are then immersed in rivers, lakes or the sea as a symbol of bidding farewell to Lord Ganesha and requesting him to come back next year.
