MUMBAI: Habitat for Humanity, a leading international NGO, will launch ‘Habitat Youth BUILD’ program on 12 May by building in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai this program aims to create awareness on affordable housing for the poor people in India. YouthBUILD is an opportunity to show solidarity with Habitat’s cause, say NO to inadequate housing, and have a tangible impact on the world.
“In this exciting new initiative for 2012, young volunteers from India, China, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand will physically build homes as well as raise awareness and support through their social and digital networks on the need to eradicate poverty housing.” Robins Duncan, Director, Mumbai Habitat Resource Centre informed INDIA CSR.
“There are several ways to get involved in Habitat India YouthBUILD. Donate your time and register to volunteer at the one-day build event on 12th May 2012. Invite your family and friends to support you by raising funds in the lead-up to the event.” he added.
“Habitat for Humanity is looking for energetic, passionate young people who share the vision of creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live. These are young people who will reach out to their network of family and friends for support of Habitat’s cause. Young people, celebrities and corporate volunteers can all play a role in YouthBUILD, whether by volunteering to build or fundraising or showing support online.” Robins Duncan said.
The United Nations estimates that more than 500 million people in the Asia-Pacific region live in slums, representing more than half of the world’s slum dwellers. The government of India estimates that the housing deficit in India is nearly 40 million – that means, nearly 200 million Indians have no place to call home. Moreover, more than 60 percent of India’s estimated 180 million dwellings are temporary or in a dilapidated condition.
