The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is holding a feature article competition and invites individuals who are involved in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability reporting to write an article that relates to these fields and to share their experiences thereof. The competition is designed to attract sustainability reporting enthusiasts who are looking to expand their networks by providing exposure through the GRI Newsletter.

If you work in the sustainability reporting field and you want to voice your opinion and share your experiences of issues related to sustainability reporting, then this is the competition for you!

The prize:
GRI and an expert panel will select three winners. Each of the winning articles will be featured in one of GRI’s newsletters over a period of three months, starting February 2011. In addition, the first place contestant will win a hard copy of the GRI G3 Guidelines, in English, (worth 79 Euros) and a full set of GRI Learning Publications, available in multiple languages, (worth 200 Euros). The second and third place contestants will each receive a GRI Learning Publication of choice (worth 50 Euros).

The competition closes on the 16 January 2011.
Detail Information:

Goal:
To spread the word on sustainability reporting
To help mainstream environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting
To give budding writer’s with a passion for sustainability reporting, an opportunity to feature their thoughts and writing prowess.

Main elements:
Every month GRI issues a newsletter, which highlights the latest news and events in the world of Sustainability Reporting. The newsletter goes out to over 17,000 subscribers who branch from the consultancy, NGO, business, government and academic sectors.

To make the newsletter more engaging, GRI invites individuals who are involved in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability reporting to write an article that relates to these fields and to share their experiences thereof. The competition is designed to attract sustainability reporting enthusiasts who are looking to expand their networks by providing exposure through the GRI Newsletter.

To Apply:
Participants should submit an article on one of the following topics:

The future of sustainability reporting
Integrated reporting (IR)
Voluntary vs. mandatory sustainability reporting
Sustainability reporting: a regional case study
Sustainability, Social Media & Stakeholder Engagement

Submissions should explore pertinent features of the chosen topic, incorporating some of the writer’s own progressive thinking. This is a unique opportunity for a non-professional writer, who is passionate about sustainability, to gain exposure through the promotion of an influential piece of writing, which will be published in the GRI Newsletter and disseminated through the GRI network.

Selection Process:
Articles will be voted for by the public on Justmeans.com. In order to vote one will need to set up a free account on Justmeans.com. Through this voting process, 10 articles will be shortlisted. Thereafter, a committee of judges comprised of Martin Smith, CEO and Founder of Justmeans, Crystal Crawford from GRI and Fabian Pattberg, CSR Blogger and Founder of SustainabilityForum.com, will decide on the three winners.

Timeline:
The competition will be open for 6 weeks from the 1 December – 16 January 2010. Voting will be open until 23 January 2010. The winners will be announced in the February edition of the GRI Newsletter, which goes out on Wednesday, 2 February 2011.

Rules and Guidelines:
The purpose of this competition is to give non-professional writers a chance to showcase their work.

Those who enter must be able to prove that they are in some way involved in sustainability reporting.

The competition is open to all nationalities worldwide, but entries must be in English.
The maximum length of the article is 650 words.

Articles over the word limit will be disqualified, as will entries received after the closing date: midnight Sunday, 16 January, 2010.

All entries must be original and previously unpublished (this includes newspapers, magazines, books and websites).

Your article should discuss one of the above mentioned topics in an informative and original way, while being clear, concise and accessible to a broad audience, including those relatively new to the field of sustainability reporting.

If you think a picture will be a helpful aid to your article, include only one, with a caption.
Entries are limited to one per person.

You are asked to write about one of the five topics that is of interest to you. We are interested in hearing regional stories about the sustainability reporting journey, so feel free to draw on examples or case studies from your region or country.

Remember to edit your work thoroughly before submitting.

Remember to explain industry jargon or acronyms – don’t assume your audience (which consists of researchers, consultants, journalists and various other vocations) knows everything.

Participants need to submit their articles to Justmeans.com using this link http://www.justmeans.com/take-action/FeatureArticleCompetition
