Bengaluru (India CSR Correspondent): Today, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India Pvt Ltd (MBRDI) takes pride in the conclusion of their ‘Clean Green Nandi’ initiative. Spanning five years, this project was dedicated to restoring the natural grandeur of Nandi Hills in Bengaluru, alongside fortifying the livelihoods of its local residents.
The Need for Action: Ecological Strains on Nandi Hills
In light of increased tourist activity since 2018, Nandi Hills witnessed alarming challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and resultant soil erosion. These developments gravely impacted the locale, leading to rivers drying up and the proliferation of plastic waste. MBRDI’s intervention was underpinned by scientific methodologies, including a thorough topological survey and a comprehensive study.
Restorative Measures in Play: Results That Matter
MBRDI’s consistent actions have birthed commendable outcomes. The initiative saw the management of a staggering 46,000 Kgs of waste, pooling of 85 Lakh litres of water, the establishment of 11 check dams, and a notable 3% decrement in plastic production. Shweta Pandey, the Vice President and General Counsel of MBRDI, stated, “The ‘Clean Green Nandi’ project showcases our unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and community upliftment.”
Employee Involvement: Hands-on Conservation
This initiative wasn’t merely an institutional effort. Over 500 MBRDI employees committed nearly 5,000 hours, engaging in tree plantation and cleanup operations. Their hands-on involvement played an instrumental role in restoring Nandi Hills’ ecological equilibrium.
Empowerment and Heritage: A Holistic Approach
One of the project’s significant facets was a 45-day training regime tailor-made for local women. This training focused on converting invasive Lantana stems into eco-conscious household items. Clearing a whopping 60 acres of this invasive species not only helped the environment but also empowered local women to establish sustainable livelihoods. Coupled with this, MBRDI took strides in preserving Nandi Hills’ rich heritage. Restoration of hilltop armories, the inception of accessible pathways, and the addition of informative signboards have augmented visitor knowledge about this historically rich site.
MBRDI’s Global Vision: Sustainability at Its Core
MBRDI’s actions in Nandi Hills are not isolated. They resonate with the global aspirations of sustainability that forms the company’s core. Embracing Corporate Social Responsibility, MBRDI orbits around the dual pillars of Sustainable Mobility and Environmental Sustainability, constantly working towards a future that is balanced – economically, ecologically, and socially.
