Distribution of festive hampers brings temporary joy, but there is a need for sustainable and more impactful CSR efforts. CSR is all about changing lives, not just pleasing lives.
NEW DELHI (India CSR): Girnar Foundation, the CSR arm of CarDekho Group, conducted its “Box of Joy” initiative, distributing over 500 festive hampers across underprivileged communities in Jaipur and Gurugram. While the initiative aimed to brighten Diwali celebrations for those in need, there is a growing recognition that such drives may lack the long-term sustainability required to bring about meaningful change. CSR, after all, is about transforming lives, not merely providing temporary relief.
Introduction of the Festive Drive
In a heartwarming initiative, the Girnar Foundation distributed 250 Diwali hampers each in Jaipur and Gurugram, containing sweets, crackers, candles, diyas, LED lights, and clothes. The drive focused on slums in Jaipur, including areas like Mansarovar, Pratap Nagar, and Jagatpura, while reaching students of the Dream Girl Foundation NGO in Gurugram. The initiative aimed to bring smiles to those often left out of the festive spirit.
Pihu Jain, Head of Girnar Foundation, expressed the foundation’s vision: “Diwali is a celebration of light, cheer, and togetherness, and we believe that true happiness comes from sharing and uplifting those around us.” She emphasized that the joy in the eyes of the recipients reinforced the foundation’s mission to create a more equitable society.

Lack of Long-term CSR Impact
Despite the emotional resonance of such charitable acts, the initiative offers only temporary relief without addressing the deeper systemic issues faced by underprivileged communities. CSR programs that focus solely on seasonal or festive giving may offer moments of joy, but they fall short in terms of sustainable impact. CSR is not just about pleasing lives for a day; it is about changing lives for the future. Initiatives that empower communities to become self-reliant and offer long-term benefits, such as education, vocational training, or healthcare, are more effective in transforming society.
While the distribution of hampers during Diwali brings happiness, it does not tackle the root causes of poverty or exclusion. More impactful CSR programs address year-round needs and focus on long-term empowerment, helping communities rise above their challenges sustainably.

Missed Opportunity for Alignment with Core Competencies
As the CSR arm of CarDekho, an automotive tech-driven company, Girnar Foundation could better align its CSR activities with the core strengths of its parent organization. There is untapped potential for the foundation to leverage CarDekho’s expertise in technology, mobility, and transportation to create more impactful CSR programs. For instance, they could focus on initiatives related to safe mobility for underprivileged communities, vocational training for youth in the automotive sector, or sustainability efforts that directly tie into the transportation ecosystem.
Instead, by offering festive hampers, the initiative stays within the realm of traditional charity, without exploring more innovative or strategic ways to drive long-term societal transformation.

Temporary Relief Over Sustained Empowerment
CSR programs are increasingly moving toward community empowerment rather than short-term charity. Girnar Foundation’s “Box of Joy” drive follows the traditional charity model, providing material goods without addressing the systemic challenges faced by underprivileged communities. While gestures like this are appreciated, they often fall short of creating self-sufficiency or resilience within the recipient groups.
Programs that build capacity, offer skills training, or improve infrastructure are much more likely to drive real change. The festive drive may help families celebrate Diwali, but it doesn’t offer them the tools or resources needed to uplift themselves from their disadvantaged position in the long run.
