In Bihar, the S M Sehgal Foundation has been working tirelessly to empower rural communities and improve their quality of life. Through their commitment to empowering local communities, the S M Sehgal Foundation has made a significant impact in Bihar. By focusing on key areas such as water management, WASH practices, and women’s empowerment, they have created lasting change in the region. Their community-led approach has enabled citizens to take ownership of projects and maintain them even after the foundation’s involvement has ended. As India continues to evolve and grow, the foundation remains dedicated to their vision of seeing every person across rural India leading a secure, dignified, and prosperous life. The foundation has partnered with local communities to create opportunities and build resilience in addressing some of the world’s most pressing issues.
Water Management and WASH Practices
One of the key areas of focus for the S M Sehgal Foundation in Bihar has been water management and WASH practices. In total, 1,464 community members have been trained on these practices, helping to improve access to clean water and promote good hygiene in the region. In addition to training, the foundation has also installed 2,912 Jalkalp and Matikalp water filters, which have provided communities with safe drinking water.

Women’s Leadership School
The Women’s Leadership School (WLS) run by the S M Sehgal Foundation has also played a crucial role in empowering women in Bihar. Suman Jaiswal, a member of the WLS in her village in district Muzaffarpur, had never heard of the term “gender equality” before. Through the WLS trainings, she learned about the concept and was able to implement changes in her own life. She asked her husband to help her with household chores, to which he was receptive, and she made efforts to no longer discriminate among her children on the basis of gender. She is happy to see this change within herself and her family.
The Power of Empowerment
Suri Sehgal, Founder and Chairman of the S M Sehgal Foundation, believes that people should always come first. As a rural development organization, the foundation has demonstrated a proven track record in engaging with communities on rural development solutions that create lasting impact. Through their community-led approach, they have empowered local citizens with increased awareness, which has led to social change at the grassroots. Active village development committees and institutions maintain the physical and social capital created in the villages even after projects and trainings are completed. This is the power of empowerment.
