Medical emergencies arrive without warning and can cause significant distress. The Indian healthcare scenario dealt with the aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic and its overall impact. It became vital to better the medical ecosystem and prepare for difficult situations. One of the most significant drawbacks would be carrying paper trails of health reports to different doctors or across cities – this can become particularly problematic during an emergency. The proactivity of the government led to a solution. To provide each willing Indian citizen with a unique health ID to store and download all medical information in one place.

The Ayushman Bharat Health Account, or the ABHA, was launched in 2021. Since most people have access to smartphones, this platform is digital. All records can be maintained online, and the user can access them with a code provided to them. This information can also be sent to doctors or other healthcare providers. Extra precautions were taken to ensure confidentiality and proper security around this platform.

Steps to Create the ABHA Account

The plan was to enable all voluntary Indian citizens to keep their health records easily accessible by optimising and using the ABHA health card download facilities. This card can also be linked to insurance accounts, and all the relevant healthcare data can be entered into the application. The registration and download are free of cost to ensure equality and availability for everyone willing to reap the benefits without discrimination.

The steps to create an ABHA account are easy to follow:

  • To create a health ID and enrol for the ABHA card, visit the official website
  • Click on the ‘new registration’ tab
  • Choose the preferred way to register – a driving license or Aadhar card

Aadhar Card

The phone number should be linked to the Aadhar for this method. An OTP will be sent to the registered number, which should be entered on the website.

Driving License

This procedure requires identity verification by visiting the official ABDM centre. Once the enrolment number is received, the nearest ABDM centre will process the warranty.

  • The next step is to add the relevant details – full name, address, phone number, etc to generate the ABHA ID.
  • Enter a username and password to log into the account in the future.
  • Verify all the information and preview the details to ensure accuracy and avoid issues later.

Keep certain documents handy to ensure seamless registration – Aadhar Card, PAN card, driver’s license, etc.

How to Download the ABHA Card

Once the registration process is complete, it is easy to download the ABHA card on a smartphone or laptop using the website or the mobile application. Once the 14-digit unique health ID number is received, visit the official website and log in with the account details. Enter the mobile number and the captcha, or log in with the ABHA number. Click on ‘view health card’ and download the PDF. A soft copy of the ABHA on the phone would make it quicker and easier to access.

The websites that can help access and download the health ID card are:

  1. Eka.care
  2. National Digital Health Mission
  3. ABHA website
  4. Ayushman Bharat Digital Portal

Download the mobile application from Google Play or iOS store and save all the necessary information. Share the details so doctors can access the health records when needed.

Who Benefits from the ABHA Card

Any citizen of India is eligible to apply for the ABHA card. Since registration is free of cost, people from all socio-economic backgrounds can reap its benefits. There is no restriction regarding sex, caste, geographical location, employment status, etc., to apply for this healthcare strategy. Since the process is online, it becomes easier to register without waiting in long queues. Intending to make healthcare accessible to everyone, the linking of hospitals and medical centres benefits everyone who have enrolled.

Conclusion

The process to create and download the ABHA card is very simple. The vitality of participating in this process ensures a step towards a globalised and automated future. Implementing a health ID setup is a dynamic process taking care of all Indian citizens. The vast network of local and state hospitals and medical centres associated with the ABHA can make life easier during emergencies. The people-centric approach promotes the accessibility of high-quality healthcare across the country. The ABHA mission is an integrated platform with high security to revolutionise healthcare in India.
