In this insightful interview, we have the opportunity to speak with Dillip Guru, the Senior Vice President of Renewable Energy at CtrlS Datacenters. With a strategic vision focused on pioneering sustainable practices within the datacenter industry, Dillip leads the charge in integrating renewable energy solutions across CtrlS operations. We’ll explore his insights on the challenges and triumphs of driving environmental sustainability and discuss how CtrlS’s CSR initiatives are crafting a greener future and enhancing public infrastructure. Join us as Dillip shares his journey and the innovative strategies propelling CtrlS towards its eco-conscious goals.

What guiding principles shape CtrlS Datacenters’ approach to corporate social responsibility, particularly in terms of environmental sustainability and enhancing public infrastructure?

CtrlS Datacentres is committed to upholding corporate social responsibility by demonstrating accountability to the entity, stakeholders, community, and the public. Recognizing our pivotal role in society, the company strives to positively impact every facet of community life. Through a series of initiatives, CtrlS actively promotes social, economic, and environmental well-being.

Moreover, the company prioritizes sustainability by implementing energy-efficient operations and embracing green practices such as renewable energy adoption and waste reduction strategies. In recent years, CtrlS’ efforts have included supplying vans for the Akshaya Patra Foundation, offering vital oxygen concentrators during the COVID-19,ensuring better living conditions for animals and empowering emerging athletes to compete on the global stage.

How does CtrlS Datacenters determine the selection of its CSR projects, and what criteria are utilized to ensure that these initiatives align with the company’s values and goals?

CtrlS is committed to driving positive change through our CSR initiatives, focusing on causes that are often overlooked or underserved and has the biggest impact on society. Our initiatives are carefully chosen to align with the company’s values and goals, focusing on areas where our support can create significant positive change. Additionally, CtrlS supports causes like children’s medical treatment, education promotion, and literature nurturing, ensuring our CSR projects resonate with our values and contribute to lasting societal impact.

Can you provide examples of recent CSR initiatives undertaken by CtrlS Datacenters, and how do these projects contribute to the company’s broader mission of social responsibility?

CtrlSDatacenters underscores thecommitment to corporate social responsibility through accountability to stakeholders, community, and environmental sustainability, while concurrently improving public infrastructure. Our ‘Planet CtrlS’ program aims to make a positive environmental impact, exemplified by our recent initiative to transition the 8MW Noida datacenter to meet 60% of the annual energy needs through solar power, offsetting 94,640 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Additionally, CtrlS contributes to public infrastructure through projects like extending support to Arignar Anna Zoological Park for infrastructure improvements and conservation efforts over two years.

What motivated CtrlS Datacenters to adopt solar power for 60% of its energy requirements in its 8MW data center in Noida, and how does this initiative align with the company’s broader sustainability objectives?

CtrlSData centers as a goal to adopt 100% renewable energy across all its operations by 2030. The decision to transition its 8MW Noida data center (DC1) to derive 60% of the annual energy needs from solar power is rooted in the company’s steadfast commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon footprint. Through this initiative, CtrlS aims to substantially reduce environmental impact.

This move is part of CtrlS’ broader strategy to embrace renewable energy sources across our datacenter operations. Complementing the company’s solar initiatives, CtrlS is implementing advanced green technologies like water recycling, direct-to-chip cooling, and liquid cooling to further enhance energy efficiency and minimize its environmental impact.

What benefits does renewable energyoffer in terms of environmental impact and operational efficiency for CtrlS?

CtrlS is making significant strides towards environmental sustainability through its investment in renewable energy, particularly solar power. The company is investing in 135-Megawatt Park(MWp) solar projects across three markets, that will generate 2,50,000-Megawatt Hours (MWh) energy annually. This includes a 125 MWp solar project in Maharashtra that will be fully owned and operated by the company. By 2030, CtrlS plans to invest in additional 1,000 MWp projects.

In the case of Noida datacenter, we are utilizing solar power for 60% of our energy needs. This shift translates to a substantial reduction in carbon footprint, which translates to offsetting over 94,640 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is comparable to planting nearly 189,281 trees.

Also, we are the first datacenter operator in India to wrap the external facade of our Mumbai DC 2 with solar panels, instead of glass. The 1.3 MWp-Solar panel, generates over 1MW of electricity for captive purposes.

By embracing renewable energy sources like solar, CtrlS reduces its dependence on traditional energy grids. Additionally, CtrlS explores advancements in cooling technologies like liquid cooling, which can further enhance energy efficiency by up to 40%. These combined efforts position CtrlS as a leader in sustainable datacenter operations.
