Wells Fargo’s collaboration with NGOs benefits 2.6 lakh students from Government schools in India under CSR.

NEW DELHI (India CSR): In India, where educational disparities persist, Wells Fargo India’s collaboration with NGOs is revolutionizing learning for 2.6 lakh students across government schools of 3 states, particularly in underserved areas, through diverse and impactful educational initiatives that foster both foundational and advanced skills.

Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) is a leading financial services company with approximately $1.9 trillion in assets.

Through its initiatives and outreach programs in Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, Wells Fargo India aims to open doors to opportunities and serve as a catalyst for positive change – breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering social progress.

Pioneering Change

Education in India, especially in rural and underserved areas, often struggles with numerous challenges—lack of infrastructure, untrained educators, high dropout rates, and outdated curricula. Addressing these issues, Wells Fargo India’s philanthropic efforts are making significant strides towards reshaping the educational landscape.

India’s education landscape has progressed, yet gaps in quality education remain, especially in underserved areas where infrastructure and trained teachers are lacking, curricula outdated, and students are dropping out. According to a recent ASER report, 25% of teens between 14 and 18 struggle to read Grade-2 text. Corporates today, along with local communities, NGOs, and government bodies can steer the implementation of holistic educational initiatives tailored to the specific needs of making education accessible to all.

A Broad Spectrum of Initiatives

Lina Nair, Chief Operating Officer at Wells Fargo India and Philippines, says, “Wells Fargo’s commitment to shaping a brighter future for India’s young population through transformative CSR initiatives in education spans a broad spectrum of initiatives. They include cognitive learning for pre-nursery children, functional literacy, and life skills development for children in elementary public schools; STEM and digital learning for high school children; and fellowship support to girls in advanced technology courses in premier institutes. We aim to cover every stage, beginning with early childhood interventions, extending to advanced STEM training.”

Through strategic partnerships with NGOs on the ground, Wells Fargo India’s current outreach programs in Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu aim to not only open doors to opportunities but also serve as a catalyst for positive change – breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering social progress.

A wide range of initiatives form the crux of Wells Fargo India’s support for community education:

Commitment to Early Education

In partnership with United Way of Bengaluru, Wells Fargo supports capacity-building of 1,900 Anganwadi workers in Chikaballapur district in Karnataka, helping them deliver the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program and strengthening the Anganwadi nutrition program, thereby impacting 1.9 lakh children. The initiative has enhanced the teaching methodology of Anganwadi workers, leading to improved learning outcomes for children.

In partnership with the Hyderabad chapter of United Way, the project supports foundational health and learning in 20 Anganwadi centres through training for auxiliary nurse midwifes and health and nutrition programs, benefitting 752 children.

Impact on Primary and Adolescent Development

In collaboration with Mantra, Wells Fargo supports 23,000 primary students in Bengaluru, facilitating holistic learning experiences from grades 1 to 5 through bridge sessions, tinkering labs, digital literacy, and STEM education. The initiative also focuses on enhancing the skills of 750 teachers in 270 public schools. Additionally, Wells Fargo supports the Agastya Foundation, providing mobile science labs to 48 public schools and benefiting over 10,000 students in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Through the Room to Read initiative, Wells Fargo has set up 40 libraries in Telangana and Karnataka, nurturing a love for reading among 5,200 students.

Impact on High School Development

Wells Fargo champions transformative initiatives in partnership with Magic Bus, Nirmaan, and Involve Edu, dedicated to shaping the future of high school students. Through Magic Bus, 9,000 adolescents from underserved communities in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana gain crucial life skills and digital literacy, empowering them for success. Nirmaan’s focus on STEM education and digital skills impacts 15,000 students across three states, igniting their potential through hands-on coding experiences. Meanwhile, Involve Edu’s peer teaching program for 2,800 students, cultivate not only their academic prowess but also leadership qualities, laying the foundation for an empowered future.

Another program with Room to Read supports 552 girl studentsfrom remote areas of Telangana, facilitating their school attendance, providing mentoring opportunities and fostering a girl-friendly school environment. This initiative aims to empower girls to complete their education and maximize opportunities for their future.

To support children of war veterans, Friends Union for Energizing Lives (FUEL) is running a program to support and mentor 300 army school students enabling them to undertake higher education in STEM programs. The aim of the program is to improve employment opportunities for these students in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Fellowship Support

Towards their commitment to promoting gender equality in STEM fields, Wells Fargo awards fellowship support to 25 female MTech students at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, empowering them to pursue their academic goals.

This holistic approach underscores Wells Fargo’s unwavering commitment to education, reflecting a vision for a brighter, more empowered future for the youth of India.
