Narendrapur (India CSR): In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #6, Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) has been instrumental in transforming lives in rural communities around its Meramandali plant. A remarkable initiative includes a solar-powered drinking water project in eleven peripheral villages under various Gram Panchayats. This sustainable approach has significantly improved the residents’ quality of life, offering a reliable and eco-friendly water source.
Extensive Distribution of Water Purifiers in Schools and Institutions
TSF has also contributed to health and sanitation by distributing 19 water purifiers to schools in Odapada Block and seven to other public institutions. This initiative ensures that students and staff have access to clean drinking water, thereby promoting better health standards in educational and public institutions.
Installation of Deep Borewells and Pipelines
In Kusupanga village, the installation of a deep borewell with a submersible pump and a 500-metre pipeline has been a critical development. This infrastructure has eased the water scarcity, particularly benefiting women who traditionally bear the responsibility of fetching water. The borewell and pipeline have significantly reduced their daily burden.
Impactful Testimonials from Local Residents
Residents like Mami Palei and Mamata Rout from Brahmana Purunakote and Joragadia villages, respectively, have expressed immense gratitude for these initiatives. They highlight the convenience of having access to water nearby and the relief from electricity charges, underscoring the project’s impact on daily life and promoting sustainable energy use.
Expansion of Tube Wells and Maintenance of Water Processing Plants
TSF’s initiatives extend to installing 122 tube wells across nine panchayats and maintaining two reverse osmosis water processing plants in Kharagprasad. These efforts have broadened the reach of clean water sources, particularly addressing water scarcity during peak summer seasons.
Year-Round Pipeline Water Supply to Adjacent Villages
In a continuous effort to provide sustainable water solutions, TSF supplies drinking water through pipelines to seven villages adjacent to the TSM plant throughout the year. This initiative is crucial in ensuring that these communities have consistent access to safe drinking water.
Community Transformation and Hope
Anita Nayak, the Sarpanch of Kusupanga panchayat, reflects on the transformative impact of having clean water access in her village. These comprehensive initiatives by Tata Steel are not only addressing essential needs but are also fostering a sense of hope and progress within these communities. Through their dedicated efforts, TSF is making a significant difference in the lives of over 20,000 villagers, marking a milestone in sustainable community development.
