The fiscal year 2023-24 showcases HUL’s commitment through substantial CSR expenditures that not only fulfill but exceed regulatory obligations.

NEW DELHI (India CSR): In a world where corporate responsibility is increasingly intertwined with business strategy, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) exemplifies how a company can transcend profits to pursue a broader societal purpose. Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has seamlessly integrated corporate social responsibility (CSR) into its operational ethos, ensuring that its financial prowess aids in crafting a sustainable and inclusive future. With a storied history spanning over nine decades, HUL has consistently demonstrated its commitment to integrity, respect, responsibility, and pioneering efforts in community development.

Overview of CSR Financials for FY 2023-24

HUL’s dedication to its core values is reflected in its financial contributions towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the fiscal year 2023-24.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of how the funds were allocated and utilized:

Total CSR Expenditure

  • Amount Spent: The company spent a total of Rs. 233.73 crores on CSR activities during the financial year. This figure surpasses the obligatory amount calculated based on the company’s profits.
  • Obligatory CSR Amount: The required CSR spending, calculated as 2% of the average net profit, was Rs. 230.62 crores for the year.
  • Excess Spending: With total expenditures amounting to Rs. 233.73 crores, HUL spent an excess of Rs. 3.11 crores above its CSR obligation.

“Our Company’s CSR is not limited to philanthropy but encompasses holistic community development, institution-building and sustainability-related initiatives. It aims to provide a dedicated approach to community development in the areas of water conservation, health and hygiene, waste management, regenerative agriculture, skill development, education, social advancement, gender equality, women empowerment and rural development.”, HUL recent Annual Report said.

Allocation of Funds

  • Direct Project Funding: A significant portion of the budget, Rs. 204.52 crores, was directly allocated to various CSR projects, with an additional Rs. 17.60 crores earmarked for ongoing projects in the unspent CSR account as per Section 135(6) of the CSR regulations.
  • Administrative Overheads: About Rs. 10.50 crores were utilized for administrative purposes related to the execution of CSR projects.
  • Impact Assessment: HUL also invested Rs. 1.11 crores in assessing the impact of its CSR initiatives, ensuring that the projects deliver tangible benefits to the community.

An Analysis of Unspent Amounts Over Three Financial Years

Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), one of India’s leading FMCG companies, has shown a significant trend of unspent Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds over the past three financial years. This analysis sheds light on the company’s CSR spending behavior, raising critical questions about the management and allocation of these funds.

Detailed Overview of CSR Spending by HUL

  • FY 2022-23: HUL reported transferring a total of Rs. 7,00,00,000 to its Unspent CSR Account as stipulated under section 135(6) of the CSR regulation. Surprisingly, the entire amount remained unspent, showing no movement out of the account for any CSR activities during the year.
  • FY 2021-22: The company transferred Rs. 28,14,87,646 into the same account. By the close of the fiscal year, a meager Rs. 10,286 remained, indicating that almost the entire amount was utilized with Rs. 28,14,77,360 being spent. The leftover amount was carried over and spent during the following financial year.
  • FY 2020-21: There was no available data reported for this financial year, creating a gap in the trend analysis and raising concerns about transparency in HUL’s reporting of its CSR activities.

Analysis of Unspent Funds and CSR Commitment

The unspent total of Rs. 7 crore in FY 2022-23 starkly contrasts with the near-complete expenditure of the previous year’s funds. This inconsistency points to potential issues in project planning and execution within HUL’s CSR framework. The complete lack of spending during a whole financial year suggests either a significant oversight or strategic withholding of funds meant for social welfare projects.

Regulatory Compliance and Future Implications

Under the CSR requirements, companies like HUL are obligated to either spend their CSR funds or explain the unspent amounts. HUL’s substantial unspent CSR amount in the latest fiscal year may draw attention from regulatory bodies looking to ensure compliance with Section 135 of the Companies Act.

The pattern of unspent funds, especially the significant amount in FY 2022-23, highlights a need for HUL to reassess its CSR strategies and implementation mechanisms. Ensuring that allocated funds are effectively spent on meaningful CSR activities is crucial for maintaining corporate credibility and truly contributing to societal and environmental development.

Focus Areas of CSR Initiatives

HUL’s CSR initiatives are not limited to mere philanthropy; they are part of a comprehensive approach to community development. According to the latest annual report, HUL focuses on several key areas:

  • Water Conservation and Hygiene: Initiatives aimed at improving water sustainability and sanitation facilities.
  • Waste Management and Regenerative Agriculture: Efforts to promote recycling and sustainable farming practices.
  • Education and Skill Development: Programs designed to enhance educational opportunities and vocational skills among underprivileged communities.
  • Social Advancement and Gender Equality: Projects focused on empowering women and promoting equality at all social levels.
  • Conclusion

Hindustan Unilever Limited’s CSR strategy goes beyond conventional corporate philanthropy, integrating sustainable community development into the core of its business operations. The financial year 2023-24 has been a testament to HUL’s enduring commitment to fostering an inclusive and sustainable future, not just for the company, but for the wider community it serves.
