CSR: Hindustan Zinc’s Unchi Udaan – Empowering the present. Transforming the future

Udaipur: The flight to a bright future is something every human being aspires for. However, the reality of lack of socio-economic independence and inadequate facilities have clipped the wings of many in our country. The only thing that distinguishes them is their determination to overcome all odds. Hindustan Zinc’s educational programs are designed to support this ambition.

Investment in strengthening the educational focus area is the biggest portfolio among Hindustan Zinc’s CSR initiatives. Through its educational interventions, the company is touching the lives of more than 1.8 lacs children and thereby enable them to have a brighter future.

Considering this, the Unchi Udaan Program was designed to bridge the gap between students with exceptional aptitude in science and the engineering institution of their dreams. The program, which is now operating in the cities of Udaipur handpicks high-performing students from minimal families from rural areas of Hindustan Zinc’s operational areas and train them over the course of a four-year residential coaching program.

The intensive training prepares students for JEE in collaboration with Resonance Edu ventures Pvt. Ltd and Vidya Bhavan Society.

So far, Unchi Udaan has been able to Transform lives of over 184 students in six batches in taking the leap and securing placements in IITs, NITs, and other top engineering institutes across the country with 100% success. The initiative is supporting 134 students this year. In a batch of 26 students, 9 class to 12 pass-outs were enrolled 1 in IIT, 1 in NIT, 9 in Jodhpur’s MBM colleges and remaining other in prestigious engineering colleges around the country.

Sameer Mohammad, a resident of Agucha in Rajasthan, is an exemplar of how the program has been successful in identifying and nurturing talents in the state. He asserts, “I was able to crack the JEE entrance with an AIR of 1725 and secure a place in Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras.”.

Priyanka Chouhan, a fighter in the making from Chittorgarh, was selected into MBM, Jodhpur, to pursue Mechanical Engineering. “The Unchi Udaan program has helped me prepare for my engineering admission examinations,” she says. During my preparation, I lost my father and grandfather, and the faculty supported me in coping with the loss so that I could reemerge and confidently appear in the examinations.”

Hindustan Zinc has been cognizant of the importance of education to the inclusive growth of children and remain focused on facilitating the same among the communities in their operational area. This program is not limited to the 184 students who have been accepted into the program, but also to the thousands of others who are inspired by their progress. The company has been working hard to get children from all age groups and all sections of society access to quality education through programs like the Shiksha Sambal Foundation, which works with government schools across Rajasthan; Khushi and Nandghar, which work with Aganwadi workers; Yashad Sumedha Scholarship for Higher Education; and Jeevan Tarang, Zinc Ke Sang, that also works with specially-abled children.

Through this fully residential program, Hindustan Zinc has ensured to provide education with classroom training and overall development of these aspirants intending to prepare and appear in various competitive, talent search and scholarship examinations of national and international level.

The vision is to enable and groom future of India to face & excel in this competitive world with endless possibilities.
