Project Saksham, which literally means ‘able,’ is dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of students in various domains and equipping them with digital and life skills essential for the present age. These skills serve as a foundation for acquiring a wide range of knowledge.
A transformative experience is underway for young individuals through the digital and life skill centers established by the S M Sehgal Foundation in partnership with the Guru Krupa Foundation. Project Saksham has trained rural youth in the basic usage of digital devices (computers/mobiles), internet navigation, government schemes, as well as essential life skills including decision-making, effective communication, goal setting, and planning in centers across states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
One of the modules covers government schemes, where students are educated about the National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS). This centrally sponsored scheme aims to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The primary objective is to reduce the dropout rate at class VIII and encourage students to continue their education by offering an annual scholarship of Rs 12,000 (Rs 1,000 per month) to eligible students every year, supporting their studies from classes IX to XII in state government, government-aided, and local body schools.
Thanu Sree, a ninth-grade student at Zila Parishad High School Demakethe Palli in Andhra Pradesh, participated in a five-month training program focusing on digital and life skills awareness. During this training, she learned about the scholarship scheme and decided to apply for it. Her application was accepted, and she subsequently received the scholarship. Thanu Sree not only benefited herself but also assisted other eligible students in applying for the scheme.
Thanu Sree expressed, “I am thrilled to have used my digital skills to apply for the scholarship. This support will enable me to continue my education and provide financial assistance to me and my family.”
