Balco Medical Centre (BMC), part of the Vedanta Medical Research Foundation, has achieved a breakthrough in treating patients suffering from rare cancers. BMC’s Surgical Oncology team has successfully performed two HIPEC procedures on patients suffering from Pseudomyxoma peritonei and ovary cancer. Both the patients are successfully recovering post this critical 12-hour long and complex surgery.
HIPEC has proven effective for selected patients with advanced or metastatic cancer of the colon, ovary, and appendix, and for cancers in which treatment options are not currently available or have proven to be unsuccessful. These types of complex procedures, which were earlier limited to metro cities have now been made available for the benefit of cancer patients of across India.
Commenting on the great team efforts by BMC, Ajay Kapur, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, and Power and Group Anchor for Vedanta’s CSR efforts said, “Vedanta’s continuous effort to deliver state-of-the-art services to the community is once again proven by BALCO Medical Centre’s Surgical Oncology team, who achieved a new medical milestone by performing two successful HIPEC procedures. BMC aims to support the society by providing world-class medical facilities, and achievements like these are testimony to Vedanta’s greater mission of ‘Giving Back’ to the communities.”
Balco Medical Centre, VMRF’s first flagship initiative set up in Naya Raipur, Chhattisgarh, is a 170-bed, state-of-the-art tertiary care oncology facility with more than 45 specialist doctors. It is the largest and most advanced oncology facility in the entire central India. It provides affordable yet world-class treatment for one of the most critical diseases.
Currently, it is fast emerging as a national leader in India’s oncology space, providing treatment to patients not only from Chhattisgarh but also from the adjoining states of Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking on BMC’s new milestone, S. Venkata Kumar, COO, BMC said “At BMC, our vision is to make a cancer-free society. We are continuously striving to develop BMC as a state-of-the-art medical and research establishment, which has the potential to provide access to affordable, ultra-modern diagnostic and therapeutic facilities to patients from pan-India and abroad. All efforts are now being made to do path-breaking research in oncology space.”
Speaking on the services being provided by BMC, one of the patients of Balco Medical Centre, Mahesh Vyas says, “Balco Medical Centre has surely been a boon for people of Chhattisgarh and entire Central India. The doctors here are very experienced, knowledgeable, and good counsellors. I have roamed the world and many metros in India to seek quality cancer care for myself, but I can confidently say that medical services here are very advanced and at par with the metro cities, yet offered at a very reasonable cost.”
During the current COVID situation, the hospital has provided all the necessary help and support to the government in combating the pandemic. BMC is the first among the three private hospitals in the region with the capability to test SARS-CoV-2 virus. BMC is the only hospital in the state capable of IgG Antibody testing and extracting Convalescent Plasma from patients recovered from COVID 19 for the treatment of severe or life-threatening COVID-19 patients.
BMC is at the forefront in every aspect of the war against COVID 19, be it testing, treatment and supplying Convalescent Plasma to hospitals across the state. The best hospital infection control practices are being followed so as not to compromise the treatment of cancer patients who many a times are immunocompromised. Prior to cancer treatments, patients are screened for COVID-19. It is a proud achievement for BMC that some patients after treatment of COVID-19, subsequently underwent major cancer surgery and have successfully recovered.
These efforts are in sync with the group’s ‘Vedanta Cares’ program, which aims to provide compassionate care to COVID patients and is now being acknowledged by every citizen of Chhattisgarh. Balco Medical Centre is having a transformational effect on cancer care, COVID treatment, and overall community healthcare.
