Remember that while these foods may help manage blood sugar, the most important factor is eating a nutritious, balanced diet.

Introduction

Diabetes is a health condition that occurs when your blood sugar levels are abnormally high. Blood sugar, aka glucose, is your primary energy source and is ingrained in the body from the foods you consume. Insulin, a pancreatic hormone, aids in transporting glucose from food into cells for use as energy. Sometimes it is difficult for your body to produce enough insulin or even use insulin effectively. Glucose remains in your blood and does not reach your cells, leading to diabetic or prediabetic-like conditions. To date, there is no cure for diabetes. The only way is to manage it, maintain it to a certain level, and stay healthy. Understanding how to control diabetes is essential for healthy functioning.

Types of Diabetes

Firstly, let us understand the different types of diabetes. Diabetes is mostly of three types:

Type 1 Diabetes

Your pancreas produces little or no insulin if you have type 1 diabetes. In this condition, the immune system directly attacks the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas. Though type 1 is primarily diagnosed in children and young adults, it can occur at any age. Insulin intake every day is the only option to stay alive if you have type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes makes it difficult for the body to produce or use insulin correctly. Type 2 diabetes strikes at any age if you are not maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Type 2 Diabetes is found mainly in middle-aged and older people, making it riskier.

Gestational Diabetes / Diabetes During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, some women develop gestational diabetes. After the baby is born, usually this diabetes goes away and does not stay longer. If you’ve had gestational diabetes, there are chances of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Controlling Measures

Now the big challenge you will face is how to control diabetes.

If you have prediabetes (high blood sugar that does not meet the criteria for diabetes), lifestyle changes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease. Making a few lifestyle changes now may help you avoid serious health complications. Remember, it is never too late to start. It is also necessary to know the best food for diabetes. Take a look at some measures that will help you keep your diabetes under control.

  • Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise not only helps you achieve and maintain a healthy weight but also helps in increasing and maintaining insulin sensitivity. Cells can use sugar in the blood more effectively with increased insulin sensitivity.

  • Eat More Fibre

Fibre-rich food substantially increases blood sugar levels by slowing sugar absorption. A high-fibre diet promotes the body to regulate blood sugar and helps you manage type 1 diabetes.

  • Food Intake Control

Food intake control regulates calorie intake and helps you maintain a healthy weight. Keeping track of your serving sizes can also help prevent blood sugar spikes. Taking small portions of meals three times a day can help.

  • Drink Ample Water to Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is a must as it has many benefits. Water keeps your body hydrated, which is crucial and helps kidneys flush out unnecessary excess sugar through urine.

  • Manage Stress

Blood sugar levels can be affected by stress. When stressed, your body produces hormones called glucagon and cortisol, which raise your blood sugar levels.

  • Quality and Quantity of Sleep

Getting enough sleep is the best and essential for maintaining good health. Poor sleeping habits and a lack of rest can impact blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity. They can also stimulate appetite and cause weight gain. Adequate sleep is concerned with both quantity and quality.

  • Diet and Lifestyle

Your diet can play an important role in diabetes prevention and management. Some best food for diabetes include:

  • Leafy Green Vegetables.
  • Eggs
  • Beans
  • Nuts
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Broccoli
  • Garlic
  • Whole Grains
  • Fatty Fish

Conclusion

Diabetes, if not well managed, increases the risk of several serious diseases. However, eating foods that help control blood sugar and insulin can significantly reduce your risk of complications. Choosing the best foods for diabetics to eat does not have to be complicated. The main goal should be to know how to control diabetes through good nutrition. Remember that while these foods may help manage blood sugar, the most important factor is eating a nutritious, balanced diet.
