70% of Indian CAIOs have a background in data, aligned with global counterparts.
BENGALURU (India CSR): Indian enterprises are gearing up for a major leadership transformation, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerging as a boardroom agenda. According to a new study by the IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV), nearly 67% of Indian organizations plan to appoint a Chief AI Officer (CAIO) within the next two years — signaling a decisive shift from pilot projects to enterprise-scale AI integration.
The IBM Institute for Business Value surveyed senior executives and AI leaders across global enterprises to assess organizational maturity in AI adoption, leadership structures, and return on AI investments. The India-focused findings highlight the country’s distinctive trajectory — where strategic leadership, talent readiness, and organizational agility are converging to redefine AI’s role in corporate growth.
AI Leadership Takes Centre Stage in Indian Boardrooms
The study highlights that Indian firms are building strong momentum toward embedding AI leadership into their corporate hierarchies. The rise of the CAIO role — a fusion of technical expertise and executive leadership — reflects India’s growing maturity in treating AI as a strategic business enabler rather than an experimental technology.
Currently, about 25% of enterprises have already appointed a CAIO, and an overwhelming 77% of those leaders report strong C-suite support, including 67% direct endorsement from CEOs. This synergy underscores how Indian organizations are aligning their corporate governance models to derive measurable business value from AI.

Higher Returns Linked to AI Leadership
Globally, the presence of a CAIO correlates with a 10% higher return on AI investment (ROI), according to the IBM study. Indian firms appear to be following this global trend, recognizing that strategic leadership and accountability can dramatically improve AI performance and scalability.
“As Indian enterprises move from pilots to scaled AI adoption, the role of the CAIO will be central to their AI transformation journeys,” said Viswanath Ramaswamy, Vice President, Technology, IBM India & South Asia.
He added, “CAIOs will bridge the gap between business and technology, ensuring measurable outcomes aligned with corporate goals.”
Anand Mahurkar, CEO and Founder of Findability Sciences, said, “Where a Chief AI Officer exists, transformation accelerates. We’ve seen enterprises move from pilots to measurable profit in months, not years. The CAIO brings clarity, speed and ownership, aligning technology with real business outcomes. IBM’s findings only validate what we experience daily: Indian enterprises are no longer experimenting with AI; they’re operationalizing it. And the CAIO is the catalyst making that scale and accountability possible.”

Strong C-Suite Alignment Accelerates AI Momentum
AI adoption in India is being propelled by robust top-level commitment. The study found that 80% of CAIOs are actively consulted by other CXOs on strategic AI decisions, demonstrating the role’s integration into core business planning.
Interestingly, 60% of Indian CAIOs report directly to the CEO or Board of Directors, highlighting the strategic significance of AI within corporate governance. Furthermore, 57% of Indian CAIOs were promoted from within their organizations — a sign of growing internal AI leadership capability and talent pipeline maturity.
Expanded Mandate
The evolving CAIO role in India is far more comprehensive than its global counterpart. These leaders are not only defining AI strategy (70%) but are also responsible for change management (57%) and implementation (57%) — nearly 10 percentage points higher than global averages.
In addition, 43% oversee upskilling programs and 37% manage reskilling initiatives, ensuring that employees are ready to work with AI-driven systems. The report also found that 60% of CAIOs control AI budgets, giving them both authority and accountability to deliver on transformation goals.
Technical Depth Becomes a Competitive Advantage
India’s AI leaders bring strong technical pedigrees to the table. About 70% of CAIOs come from data science or analytics backgrounds, while 73% have previously served in technology roles, and 50% have innovation experience. This mix of data literacy and visionary leadership enables CAIOs to lead transformation agendas that balance experimentation with execution.
Their combined expertise is helping Indian enterprises gain a competitive edge in applying AI across key business functions — from operations and finance to marketing, HR, and supply chain management.
Adoption: From Pilots to Scaled Execution
Although 67% of Indian organizations are still focused on AI pilots, the report signals optimism for a transition to scaled deployment. The alignment between leadership vision and CAIO stewardship is expected to accelerate this shift.
Notably, only 18% of Indian CAIOs reported facing major challenges in implementing AI — compared to 30% globally — suggesting that Indian enterprises have created a relatively conducive environment for AI transformation.
India Poised to Lead the Next Wave of AI Governance
The IBM Institute’s findings mark a defining moment for India’s digital economy. As enterprises evolve from data-driven to AI-native operations, the institutionalization of the CAIO role will become critical for governance, ethics, and long-term value creation.
Experts say the next two years will witness a surge in formal AI leadership appointments, with CAIOs expected to play a decisive role in building responsible AI frameworks, driving automation, and shaping national competitiveness in the global AI race.
