LEXINGTON, Ky.: Valvoline Inc. (NYSE: VVV), a leading provider of automotive services and premium branded lubricants, has recycled 5.1 pounds of materials in 2020.
The company recycled 9.2M automotive fluids during the year with 11% increase. It used 344,000 metric tons material as input material.
Valvoline’s Serbian operation continues to make strides in reducing waste within its facilities and those of their industrial customers. While waste management
efforts are still developing at the country level, it is taking an active role in educating its customers on responsible product life cycle management and in helping them implement sustainable approaches in their operations. By connecting customers with waste management companies or third-party recyclers, the company is helping to ensure its products are properly disposed of or re-refined.
Each year Valvoline celebrates Earth Day with planned activities around the globe. In 2020, the usual company-wide celebration was postponed due to COVID-19, but it was able to carve out time later in the year for each facility to recognize the event at a local level. From community beautification to recycling efforts to environmental educational lessons, it still managed to make an impact during the pandemic, the company said.
2020 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report said that the foundational CSR pillars at Valvoline center on its “Three V’s” – Values, Vow, and Vision – with a strategic focus in three main areas: citizenship, sustainability, and diversity, equity and inclusion.”Our latest CSR report helps demonstrate the ways in which we delivered for our customers, achieved tremendous results, and made significant progress toward realizing our vision for the company, all through the many challenges 2020 brought,” CEO Sam Mitchell said. “I have never been more proud to work alongside the 8,800 people who make up our team.”
The new report documents Valvoline’s efforts and progress in creating value beyond premium branded automotive products for its broad stakeholder base. Key metrics and highlights from 2020 include:
Achieving a Valvoline Instant Oil Change℠ (VIOC) injury rate 24 percent below the industry average.
Reaching zero-landfill status at 67 percent of supply chain sites.
Recycling 5.1 million pounds of materials.
Once again being named one of the “Best Places to Work in Kentucky.”

“Valvoline’s CSR journey is an ever-evolving process that is significantly informed by stakeholder engagement efforts,” said Gary Allen, Vice President, Environmental Health and Safety.
“We remain committed to our company’s fundamental values – including those of corporate social responsibility – while displaying the flexibility to effectively meet the expectations of our customers, team members, communities, and investors.”
DIY Packaging Innovation
In 2020, Valvoline launched an exciting new packaging design with do-it-yourselfers and the environment squarely in mind. The aptly named FlexFillTM bag makes changing gear oil in those hard-to-reach spots much easier than the traditional, rigid hard-plastic containers on the market. By implementing flexible materials into the packaging design, the ability to reach tight spaces in the undercarriage of an automobile allows consumers to utilize every bit of gear oil in the package, ultimately reducing product waste.
The new packaging also accounts for a 62 percent weight reduction in plastic when compared to previous containers.
“Every day, we work to create solutions for our users, whether those solutions create better protection for vehicles, greater fuel economy, enhance the lifespan of an automobile or provide time-saving, environmentally sound options for DIYers,” said Roger England, Valvoline chief research and development officer.
