The ‘Caring for Life’ Ethos in Action
At the core of Cipla’s CSR philosophy is its enduring purpose: ‘Caring for Life’. This isn’t merely a slogan but a guiding principle that informs the company’s initiatives, striving to create a healthier world and enrich the lives of all stakeholders. The philanthropic arm, Cipla Foundation, serves as the principal implementation agency, collaborating with credible institutions and NGOs like HelpAge India, Tata Memorial Centre, and BAIF to extend its reach across various geographies, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, and Sikkim.
Advancing Healthcare Access
A significant portion of Cipla’s CSR efforts in FY 2024-25 focused on enhancing community health, with a particular emphasis on palliative care and strengthening primary healthcare systems. The company supported the integration of an additional palliative care unit into one of Mumbai’s largest government hospitals, Nair Hospital. Furthermore, it bolstered comprehensive cancer care in North India by launching palliative care services at the Tata Memorial Centre in Punjab and the Regional Cancer Centre in Rajasthan. Maharashtra also saw the launch of its largest palliative home care initiative in Pune, providing holistic care to seriously ill patients.
Beyond India, Cipla Foundation in South Africa continued its impactful healthcare initiatives. The “Miles for Smiles” partnership with Operation Smile funded more than 63 cleft surgeries, transforming lives and fostering hope.
Environmental Stewardship
Cipla’s commitment to ‘Caring for Life’ extends to the planet, with significant strides in environmental sustainability. In FY 2024-25, the company achieved a major milestone by becoming water positive across its India manufacturing operations, replenishing more water than consumed, well ahead of its target timeline. This remarkable achievement included conserving 24.7 lakh cubic metres of water across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, and recycling 51% of its total water withdrawal.
The company also made substantial progress in reducing its carbon footprint, achieving a 58% reduction in Scope 1 (energy-based) and Scope 2 emissions compared to the FY 2019-20 baseline, with 64% of its electricity sourced from renewables. A 100 MWp solar partnership generated 95,005 iRECs, contributing to a greener energy profile. Impressively, all 37 of Cipla’s manufacturing units and its R&D Centre in India are now certified as “Zero Waste to Landfill”. These efforts earned Cipla a ranking of 3rd globally in the Drug & Pharmaceuticals sector by S&P Global CSA, with an ESG score of 79, and inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World and Emerging Markets Index.
Cipla’s responsible waste management practices further contributed to environmental conservation. In FY 2024-25, total waste directed to disposal from global operations decreased by 19% to 3,267 MT. Empowering Communities and Education
Beyond health and environment, Cipla’s CSR initiatives focused on empowering communities through education, skilling, and disaster response. The company participated in the Government of India’s PM Internship Scheme, offering industry-relevant training to young talent. In a unique educational initiative, an “AI on Wheels” van was introduced in Sikkim to deliver AI-based technical skills to students in remote areas.
The spirit of volunteerism thrives within Cipla, with over 15,000 employees dedicating more than 1,00,000 hours across 150+ cities.
