Opposition leader raises concerns over lack of transparency and accountability in CSR fund allocation and spending.
RAIPUR (India CSR): The issue of the amount of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending was raised in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on Thursday, sparking a debate among lawmakers. The Commerce and Industry Minister stated that CSR spending is mandatory for companies and industries under the law set by the Center. If they fail to meet their CSR obligations, the state government does not have the authority to take action.
Opposition leader Narayan Chandel raised concerns over the allocation and spending of CSR funds, stating that there was a lack of transparency and accountability. During the discussion, Assembly Speaker Dr. Charandas Mahant requested that a list of CSR spending be made available.
Following a lengthy discussion, the opposition staged a walkout, charging the collectors with utilising their discretion when spending the CSR amount. Pramod Sharma, a Jogi Congress Legislator, and Dharamjit Singh also participated in the strike.
In India, CSR spending has been a sensitive topic because businesses are compelled by law to devote a specific portion of their income to charitable causes. The government and civil society are now paying more attention as questions about the transparency and efficiency of CSR spending have been highlighted.
As a result of lawmakers and civil society organisations calling for stricter regulations and oversight to make sure that these funds are used effectively to benefit society, the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly debate has brought to light the need for greater transparency and accountability in CSR spending.
