BALCONAGAR (Korba): BALCO has implemented the ‘Disha Project’ under the purview of its Community Development Programme in Village Dondro. A camp was organised with the help of an NGO – ‘Shroth’ to make women aware about their health issues.
Dr. Vimaleshwari, Specialist-Female diseases, Health Volunteers- Kranti Lahare, Mrs. S. Sahu and Asha Thawait checked the health of the women who came to the camp. The needy were provided with free medicine.
The camp benefitted the women from Village Dondro, Belakchhar and Sanjay Nagar. Active participation in the camp was shown by Kanchan Nageshiya, Associate Manager, CSR, Balco, Volunteers from ‘Shroth’, namely Dipakiran Tirki and Dipika Rathore and Sajjan Kanwar, Anganwadi volunteer.
A glimpse about Disha Project: Balco has started ‘Disha Project’ with the cooperation of Korba District Administration, District Women and Child Welfare Dept. Health Dept. and Education Dept. The purpose of the project is to strengthen the standards of health and nutrition in Village Dondro and to make the women, teenagers, children and youth at large, aware about health issues. Under the ‘Disha Project’ children from 0-6 years are getting help for their overall development. Women and children are also being made aware about education .
Till date, 80 women have taken training in stitching at the ‘Naari Shakti Kendra’ . Women self-help groups have been formed. Children who have left their studies are being encouraged to continue their education through correspondence education so that they come back in the main stream of education. Free tuition is also being provided to students.
The Women Empowerment Centre is providing free training in Computers and Beauty Parlour Management. A library is also being run for those who are interested in reading. From time to time, Child Health Camps, Training to teenage girls, healthy baby competition, Mothers’ Meet, sports tournament etc. are also held at the centre.
