BHOPAL: Heeding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call on sanitation from the Red Fort, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today announced that toilets would be constructed in all Government schools in the state within a year.
“We will construct toilets in each and every school in the state within a year as desired by the Prime Minister in his Independence Day speech,” he told reporters at the Mantralaya (State secretariat) here.
Chouhan said for providing toilet facility in each and every household in the BJP-ruled State, the Government has already launched a campaign, ‘Maryada’. The campaign seeks to address sanitation issues related to women and open defecation, especially in rural areas, he added. (PTI)

According to estimates, 2.6bn people around the world lack access to a hygienic toilet. The United Nations hopes to halve this figure by 2015 as part of its millennium development goals. In India alone, more than 700 million people have no access to toilets which have proper waste disposal systems.
Corporate Social Responsibility and Toilet
Prime Minister called on the corporate sector to help in building toilets in schools under their Corporate Social Responsibility projects under priority programme. It is worth mentioning that, with the implementation of the new company law from April 1, 2014 India has become the only country in the world with legislated corporate social responsibility (CSR) and a spending threshold of up to Rs 15,000 crore a yearly.
The new law mandates that all companies, including foreign firms, with a minimum net worth of Rs 500 crore, turnover of Rs 1,000 crore and net profit of at least Rs 5 crore, spend at least two percent of their profit on CSR. Works carried out by corporate in the area of toilet building is very much part of social welfare spending activity of Scheduled- VII of Section 135 (the CSR Rule) under new companies law.
