A Quiet Place: Day One – The Prequel We Didn’t Know We Needed
The world of A Quiet Place is about to get bigger and louder. On February 7, 2024, Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One, the prequel spin-off of the popular horror franchise created by John Krasinski. The trailer, which has already amassed over 3 million views on YouTube, promises a thrilling and terrifying origin story of the alien invasion that forced humanity to live in silence.
A New Perspective on a Familiar Nightmare
A Quiet Place: Day One is set at the beginning of the invasion, before the events of the original film, and follows a new set of characters as they try to survive the chaos and carnage. Lupita Nyong’o stars as the lead protagonist, a journalist who witnesses the first attack in Manhattan and joins forces with a group of strangers, including Joseph Quinn and Alex Wolff, to escape the city and find a safe haven. The film is directed by Michael Sarnoski, who made his acclaimed debut with Pig in 2021, and co-written by Sarnoski and Jeff Nichols, who previously helmed acclaimed films such as Mud and Midnight Special.
The trailer opens with footage from the first two films, showing the Abbott family’s struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where making any sound can attract deadly creatures. The screen then goes dark and the subtitle “Day One” appears, signaling a flashback to the start of the nightmare. The trailer then cuts to Manhattan, where Nyong’o’s character is seen walking on the streets, unaware of the impending doom. Suddenly, missiles strike the city and people start to panic as the aliens emerge and attack. The trailer then shows glimpses of the characters’ journey to escape the city, while also hinting at some of the secrets and mysteries behind the invasion.

A Spin-Off That Expands the Franchise
A Quiet Place: Day One is the third installment in the A Quiet Place franchise, which has been a critical and commercial success since its debut in 2018. The first film, directed by and starring Krasinski alongside his wife Emily Blunt, grossed over $340 million worldwide and received rave reviews for its innovative and suspenseful storytelling. The sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, was released in 2021 after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and earned over $290 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Both films also received multiple awards and nominations, including Golden Globe and Oscar nods for sound editing and mixing.
The spin-off, which was announced in 2020, is intended to expand the franchise and explore different aspects of the world and the characters. Krasinski, who serves as a producer on the spin-off, said in an interview that he wanted to create a “different experience” for the audience and give them a “new perspective” on the story. He also praised Sarnoski and Nichols for their vision and talent, saying that they were the “perfect” filmmakers to take on the project. Nyong’o, who is also a producer on the film, said that she was drawn to the role because of the “emotional depth” and “humanity” of the story, as well as the “intensity” and “excitement” of the genre.
A Quiet Place: Day One is scheduled to be released on June 28, 2024, exclusively in theatres. The film is expected to be a major summer blockbuster and a must-see for fans of the franchise and horror lovers alike. As the trailer’s tagline says, “Discover why our world went quiet.”
