MUMBAI: Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston are conducting a State visit to the Republic of India, from February 22 to March 2, 2014. While in Mumbai, Her Excellency will meet with women leaders from the private and public sectors, civil society and academia as well as visit Dasra, a strategic philanthropy foundation co-founded and co-managed by Indo-Canadian, Neera Nundy.
During Her Excellency’s visit, Dasra will host a round-table conference and facilitate a conversation with NGOs that work in the mental health space.Representatives from organizations such as Ummeed – Child Development Centre and Manav Foundationwill present their work on mental health and share their experience, learning and challenges.
Neera Nundy, Partner and Co-Founder, Dasra spoke on this topic, “We are delighted to be hosting Her ExcellencySharon Johnston.Mental health treatment most often cannot be afforded by everyone in a country like India. This is where non profit organizations play a key role where through a mix of community health workers and physicians staffed by the non profit,who reach the hard-to-get areas, where effective social support is provided to mentally ill patients.”She further mentioned, “With our network and past experience of working with various non-profits, we are glad to present to Her Excellency different organizations and showcase their approaches towards mental disorders focusing mainly towards marginalized communities.”
Dasra’s reach and experience across the social sector space through their due-diligence, research and capacity building process provides a holistic understanding of the mental space sector. Dasra would leverage their knowledge and expertise from the social sector and share best practices and social change mechanisms that address this issue in particular.
