NEW DELHI: Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, continued its cultural journey with the second edition of Baithak – The Music Series, held at the Ashoka Lawn on campus. Building on the spirit of its inaugural chapter, the evening offered an intimate and immersive musical experience, foregrounding rhythm as both tradition and innovation.
The concert opened with a felicitation ceremony led by Prof. Dinesh Khattar, Principal of Kirori Mal College, recognising the participating artists and reaffirming the institution’s commitment to nurturing artistic excellence. This was followed by MUSOC’s annual Indian ensemble presentation, setting a refined and evocative tone for the evening.
A Rhythmic Exploration by TĀL FRY
The highlight of the Baithak was a compelling performance by TĀL FRY, a New Delhi-based percussion ensemble known for its innovative approach to rhythm. Featuring accomplished artists—Adarsh Nair (vocals), Saptak Sharma (tabla), Soumendra Goswami (sitar and djembe), Varun Rajasekharan (ghatam), Manohar Balatchandirane (mridangam), Mahavir Chandrawat (dholak), and G. Raghavendra Prasath (violin)—the ensemble delivered a richly layered sonic experience.
Seamlessly blending North and South Indian classical traditions with folk influences and contemporary elements, the performance showcased an intricate dialogue between diverse instruments and musical idioms. Enhanced by Carnatic vocal textures and thoughtful light design, the recital unfolded as both technically sophisticated and emotionally resonant.
The presentation began with a traditional Carnatic Mallari, followed by an Abhang dedicated to Lord Vitthal, and a vibrant Tillana that highlighted complex rhythmic interplay. The evening concluded with a powerful composition inspired by legendary rhythmic maestros, leaving the audience with an electrifying and deeply engaging experience.

A Continuing Cultural Vision
Envisioned as a year-long series of twelve curated Baithaks, the initiative brings together alumni and invited performers from across the University of Delhi and beyond. Each edition follows an intimate, two-hour format that combines performance with interaction, offering students and aspiring musicians’ rare access to accomplished practitioners and living traditions of Indian music.
With Baithak – The Music Series, Kirori Mal College continues to reinforce its legacy as a space where academic excellence and cultural depth coexist—ensuring that India’s musical heritage remains a living, evolving practice for new generations.
