Every year as the spring descends on the hills of Uttarakhand preparations for the oncoming “Yatra” season commence. For the hoteliers, local shop keepers, travel agents, mule owners, the yatra season is the most awaited event of the year. All the shrines (Char Dhams comprising of Badri-Nath, Kedar Nath, Gangotri & Yamnotri) and Hemkund Sahib start opening and by 15th of May the season is on.
This year also the most awaited time came and all seemed to be well when around 15th June, the weather changed. The rains came down as if with vengeance and in four days of incessant rains breaking century old records the Uttrakhand was in a state of deluge. Large scale unprecedented damage of man and material has taken place, particularly around famous Kedar Nath Shrine (constructed in 8th Century , overseen by Adi Shankracharya) .
The whole world is watching with shocks and surprise that how nature can be so crude to innocent lives killing thousands of devotees , misplacing families coming from all over India. People are still struggling for their lives by eating grass and drinking rain water, authorities are helpless to reach their.
We at SFID (Society For Inclusive Development) and INDIACSR (India’s Popular CSR News Network www.indiacsr.in) have been deeply moved by the calamity that has struck this Himalayan Region of Uttarakhand. Thousands of people have lost their lives, hundreds are missing, immense damage has taken place to the houses, their animals and livelihood.
It will be a marathon effort to put the lives of all the affected people back on rails. Our heart goes out to all these people who have suffered in this calamity. Though the Government is trying to do its bit with such major damage, we feel that it will not be sufficient.
The Team SFID, including its network alliance, volunteers, friends, well wishers appeals to all the people to come forward and contribute to help mitigate the sufferings of the people in the hills.
SFID has decided to extend all possible help to the affected people in their hour of need by taking part in rescue operations providing food and health related support services, rebuilding their homes and lives, counseling & rehabilitating them.
