Why did Schwab Foundation decide to focus on Social Entrepreneurs from India?
For twenty years now, the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship (a sister organisation of the World Economic Forum) has been accelerating the outstanding models of social innovation across the globe. In addition, the Schwab Foundation wanted to develop a community of interaction and experience exchange and provide social entrepreneurship higher visibility at the global level.
The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship has supported the world’s leading social entrepreneurs in their efforts to create a more just, equitable, and sustainable world and over 300 social entrepreneurs continue to be engaged in their activities.
India with its diversity in culture, geography, population, and social issues provides a strong bedrock for social innovation and is also among the few countries with a variety of innovative Social Entrepreneurs working towards bringing constructive change in society.
The Social Entrepreneur of the Year (SEOY)- India Award is a joint initiative that has been introduced through a collaboration between Jubilant Bhartia Foundation and Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship (a sister organisation of the World Economic Forum) in 2010. The award is given to recognise promising and successful social entrepreneurs, with excellence in large-scale, system change models.
Social entrepreneurs are one of the key enablers of inclusive growth who implement practical and sustainable solutions to address challenges in numerous areas including health, education, and environment, access to technology and job creation. Every year, the program felicitates outstanding entrepreneurs working in major thematic areas like Education, Health, Livelihood, Rural Development, Financial, and Social Inclusion, etc., to represent their work and India on a global platform.
Social Entrepreneurs of the Year Award winners from India have always set the bar high with their innovation and dedication to bring change and genuinely fulfill all the stringent parameters required to be a part of the prestigious institution.
India has long been a learning workshop of social innovation and entrepreneurship. The ‘jugaad’ way of finding solutions to difficult problems, sums up the way some of the Indian social entrepreneurs work with scarce resources and yet find outstanding solutions to challenges which even large enterprises fail to address. Keeping this in mind, the Foundations promote outstanding mature stage entrepreneurs.
