GUWAHATI – The two-day national conference on ‘Recent advances in biodegradation of human wastes’ (SANICON 2014), organised by the Defence Research Laboratory, Tezpur, concluded recently, a PIB (DW) release stated.
In the closing ceremony, Dr Brahma Singh, Padmashree, ex-Director of DRL, Tezpur, was the chief guest and Dr Bhuvnesh Kumar, Director (PM) O/O DG-LS, DRDO HQs, Dr Dilip R Ranade, ex-Director, ARI, Pune, and Dr Praveen Kumar, Associate Director, DRDE, Gwalior, were the guests of honour respectively. Forty-eight delegates from various educational institutes, SSB, Army personnel, representatives of NGOs and business organisations from different parts of India participated in the conference.
Dr S Chatterjee, scientist and organising secretary, delivered the concluding remarks of the conference. Dr Bhuvnesh Kumar gave an overview on the development of the DRDO bio-toilet and said that the DRDO, especially the DRDE, Gwalior, and the DRL, Tezpur, have done a commendable work in developing the bio-toilet, which is well accepted in India with large-scale implementation in different parts of India through the public-private partnership.
Dr Praveen Kumar expressed the hope that this conference would help in the exchange of ideas among scientists, academicians, Armed forces personnel, policy makers, field-level implementers and other related professionals in the fields of biodegradation technology for human faecal matter management under different climatic conditions.
Dr DR Ranade said that biodegradation of waste would bring about an innovative way of handling human waste in a clean, sustainable and cost-effective manner. Chief guest Dr Brahma Singh, in his speech, expressed the view that biodegradation of solid waste would be useful in the management of human waste in a scientific and cost-effective manner. He hoped that the outcome of the conference would be of immense value to the society as well as to the defence sector.
Earlier, Dr Vijay Veer, Director, DRL, and the chairman of the conference welcomed and felicitated the guests, while chief guest Prof MK Chaudhury, VC, Tezpur University, inaugurated the conference.
