Professionally qualified as a civil engineer, certified Chartered Engineer is Fellow member of professional bodies’ and driven by his passion to make a difference in the life of rural marginalized communities chose “water” to be his life’s mission.
A firm believer in the interrelated issues of poverty and environmental degradation focuses on “water and water related issues” to strengthening the ecology, society and economy continuum.
Practitioner from the very beginning, began his professional life in 1989 in conventional construction sector. The urge within to do something better and work with the rural communities brought him in 1996 to Rajiv Gandhi Watershed Management Mission and later in Foundation for Ecological Security (FES), some of the remote locations in Madhya Pradesh, as a subject matter specialist on water.
After 11 years of work in the rural development sector took a break and moved to work on quality assurance & Quality control in the core infrastructural development sector where he worked as proof consultant in World’s highest railway bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, lead team of engineers for quality inspection of construction of Alumina Smelter plant of Vedanta at Jharsuguda (Orissa) and similar other projects.
However, the missing community connect forced him to quit the job and join Reliance Foundation in 2011 to ensure sustainable water development and management.
Sunil works on a one point agenda of making villages fully water secure and drives RF’s work on water across 12 states through 27 cluster locations in addition to CSR sites in making villages water secured. Sunil’s core interest is to make water harvesting & management scalable through innovating, co-designing affordable solutions to become it public movement.
Signs to this effects are visible in Agar MP, Jasdan Gujrat & others where community are coming together, planning & contributing money from their profits to enhance capacity of dams, reconstruction of old broken dams, construction of Ferrocement check dams & water storage tanks up to 70000 liters capacity by themselves.
He has innovated so many low cost design to construct check dam earthen / concrete, water storage tanks by introducing Ferrocement Technology. In Ferrocement Technology no need for centring and shuttering material, row material consumption is very low and can be applied by anyone to construct for themselves. The overall cost of water harvesting is very low (Between 25 -50%) in comparison of existing trend in sector hence people are taking it even by their own resources.
