HYDERABAD: Shri Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad had conferred PSN Murthy with the Iyyanki Venkataramanayya ‘Granthalaya Kartha’ award for the year 2011 in recognition of his services to the library profession. The award carries a certificate and a cash prize.
Probably he is the first person to apply the concept of CSR to libraries and proved that corporate firms and PSUs can improve public libraries through their CSR mandate. In recognition of his self-less yeomen service to public libraries, his friends and fellow professionals felicitated him and brought out a festschrift volume “Corporate Social Responsibility and Public Libraries”.
PSN Murthy has retired from service in 2011 after serving as Library Manager at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant for more than 25 years. Shri Murthy is the founder President of the ‘Society for the Promotion of Public Libraries’, Visakhapatnam which is engaged in the promotion and development of public libraries and NGO managed libraries in and around Visakhapatnam.
PSN Murthy is a recipient of many awards for his contribution to rural library services such as the – Jawaharlal Nehru award for outstanding Library services of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in 1994; ‘Samaja Mithra’ for best citizen award by Prothsaha Cultural and Social Welfare Association, Visakhapatnam in 2011; ‘Aanimuthyam Lifetime Achievement State Award 2011’ by Mother Teresa Social Welfare Organization, Visakhapatnam; ‘Nandana Nama Samvastara Ugadi Puruskaram’ – 2012 by Shaka Granthalayam, ZGS, Visakhapatnam; and Dr. Ranganathan – P N Kaula award for 2011 by Prof. PN Kaula Endowment for Library & Information Science, Lucknow.
