 Corporate Social Responsibility– A New Business Imperative

MUMBAI: The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Rules introduced under section 135 of the Companies Act 2013 effective April 1, 2014 has stirred considerable debate amongst corporates in India. In keeping with Indo-American Chamber of Commerce’s (IACC) agenda, we recognize the need to take the lead in creating a positive impact through endeavors that are of high value and interest to all stakeholders namely, IACC embers, entrepreneurs, and corporate professionals across sectors.

IACC csr conferenceWith this perspective IACC is hosting an all-day conference titled ‘Corporate Social Responsibility: The New Business Imperative’featuring key topics of debate in the CSR domain. This Conference will be held in the Crystal Room of the Taj Mahal Palace & Towers, Colaba, Mumbai on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.

The objective of the Conference is to familiarize IACC members and all other stakeholders with section 135 and also to bring to light some of the most socially responsible and sustainable practices that are in line with national and international standards. With eminent speakers of exceptional caliber and expertise in this domain, this Conference is sure to be a knowledge platform that will engage the audience and create a space for dialogue on partnering for CSR in compliance with the rules.

Some of the themes that this conference will highlight include ‘Decoding the New CSR Imperative’, ‘The CSR Mandate: A Step in the Right Direction for Corporate Governance’, ‘Evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility in Corporate America’, ‘CSR Challenges & Opportunities for Ensuring Inclusive Growth in India’, ‘Can CSR Rules Help Fill The Funding Gaps in Creating the Eco-System for Financial Inclusion?’, and ‘Facing Challenges & Devising Solutions for CSR Strategies with the New CSR Rules Driven Regulatory Environment’.

With the new rules adding further responsibility on Corporate Boards, a number of questions have risen; specifically those questioning the role of the new CSR mandate in the overall discussion of Corporate Governance. The key panel at the CSR Conference will include 4-5 eminent board members and the DG &CEO of Institute of Corporate Affairs who will discuss the role of the governing board in organizations. The Banking and Financial Sector panel comprising of 4-5 industry experts will discuss whether the new CSR rules offer an opportunity to fill funding gaps that currently exist. They will deliberate on areas that are essential for building an eco-system that enables the Financial Inclusion Agenda. The last panel on CSR Strategies will comprise of CSR Heads of eminent companies and speakers from the UN Global Compact and UNICEF. They will focus on challenges that currently affect this domain and discuss CSR solutions that can be implemented within the new CSR mandate.
