Legendary actor Dharmendra, who passed away on November 24, 2025 at the age of 89, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that continues to inspire generations of cinema lovers. His death marks the end of an era in Hindi cinema, prompting fans and the industry to revisit the remarkable milestones, stories, and relationships that shaped his six-decade career. Beyond his iconic roles and timeless charm, Dharmendra’s journey is filled with fascinating and lesser-known moments that reveal the man behind the superstar. From his discovery through a Filmfare talent contest to earning the title of Bollywood’s “He-Man,” from his musical partnership with Mohammed Rafi to his unforgettable chemistry with Hema Malini, each aspect of his life adds depth to his legacy. These 10 expanded facts explore his records, collaborations, family ties, awards, versatility, and his poignant final film Ikkis, offering a deeper, more intimate look at the legend we fondly remember.

1. Discovered Through the Filmfare Talent Contest

Dharmendra’s journey to stardom began with the 1958 Filmfare Talent Hunt, a prestigious gateway for aspiring actors. He did not come from a film background, yet his striking looks, humility, and natural screen presence immediately impressed the selectors. This opportunity opened the doors to Hindi cinema, where he quickly gained attention. His debut came in 1960, and within a few years, he was being hailed as one of the most promising newcomers. This contest truly changed the trajectory of his life.

2. Holds a Record Number of Hits in Hindi Cinema

Over a career spanning six decades, Dharmendra starred in more than 300 films, many of which became major commercial successes. Few actors in Bollywood have enjoyed such consistent box-office appeal across eras—from black-and-white cinema to the modern age. His filmography covers action, romance, drama, and comedy, proving his wide audience connect. Industry analysts often mention that he holds one of the highest numbers of hits delivered by any Hindi film actor. His staying power remains unmatched even today.

3. The Origin of Bollywood’s “He-Man” Title

Dharmendra earned the nickname “He-Man” due to his rugged good looks, athletic build, and strong action-hero roles. In the 1960s and 70s, he became the go-to actor for physically demanding characters who embodied bravery and masculinity. Audiences admired his ability to perform stunts without body doubles, long before action choreography became sophisticated. Yet, his charm and soft-spoken nature created a striking contrast. This rare combination solidified his image as Bollywood’s original masculine icon, a title that stayed with him for life.

4. Over 100 Songs Picturised on Him Were Sung by Mohammed Rafi

The partnership between Dharmendra and Mohammed Rafi is considered legendary in Hindi cinema. Rafi’s melodic voice perfectly complemented Dharmendra’s expressive on-screen persona, resulting in some of the most memorable songs of the era. From romantic ballads to playful numbers, this collaboration produced timeless classics still cherished today. The fact that Rafi sang over 100 songs for Dharmendra speaks to their strong creative synergy. These songs continue to evoke nostalgia and form an essential part of India’s musical heritage.

5. He Was First Interested in Playing Thakur in Sholay

While fans know him as the fun-loving, fearless Veeru from Sholay, Dharmendra was initially inclined to play Thakur Baldev Singh, the stoic ex-police officer. Director Ramesh Sippy considered several legendary actors for the part. However, Dharmendra ultimately chose Veeru because the role allowed him to share significant screen space with Hema Malini, with whom he shared deep affection. This decision proved iconic, as Veeru became one of the most beloved characters in Indian cinema, shaping his legacy further.

6. Shared the Screen With His Sons in Multiple Films

Dharmendra’s collaborations with his sons—Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol—offered fans a glimpse into their off-screen family bond. Films like Dillagi (1999), Apne (2007), and Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) celebrated themes of love, loyalty, and unity, resonating strongly with audiences. These movies weren’t just commercial ventures; they symbolised generational legacy. Dharmendra also supported his sons behind the scenes, producing films like Ghayal, which became one of Sunny Deol’s biggest hits and helped cement their place in Bollywood.

7. Awarded the Padma Bhushan for His Contribution to Cinema

In 2012, Dharmendra was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, recognising his impactful contribution to the arts. This accolade acknowledged not only his long and successful acting career but also his influence on shaping Bollywood’s narrative through different eras. His versatility, ability to connect with audiences, and dedication to his craft made him a natural choice for the honour. The award cemented his status as a national treasure whose work transcended generations and linguistic boundaries.

8. Master of Both Action and Comedy

Dharmendra remains one of the rare Bollywood stars who excelled equally in high-octane action films and light-hearted comedies. Movies like Mera Gaon Mera Desh showcased his action hero persona, while Chupke Chupke highlighted his impeccable comedic timing. His ability to shift effortlessly between intense drama and playful humour made him a filmmaker’s delight. This range also endeared him to diverse audiences, ensuring his appeal across different age groups. His comic performances, especially with directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, are still celebrated today.

9. On-Screen and Off-Screen Chemistry With Hema Malini

Dharmendra and Hema Malini formed one of Bollywood’s most iconic on-screen pairings, starring together in more than 30 films. Their chemistry lit up the big screen, contributing significantly to the success of many 1970s blockbusters. Audiences adored the warmth and innocence they brought to their characters. Over time, their bond grew beyond cinema, becoming a legendary love story in Indian film history. The Dharmendra–Hema partnership remains one of the most memorable romantic duos the industry has ever seen.

10. His Final Film Ikkis Marks a Poignant Farewell

Dharmendra’s last cinematic appearance will be in Ikkis, a Sriram Raghavan-directed war drama slated for release in December 2025. The film tells the story of Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, India’s youngest Param Vir Chakra awardee. Dharmendra plays the role of the soldier’s grandfather, bringing emotional depth and gravitas to the narrative. This role serves as a fitting farewell for an actor whose career shaped Indian cinema. Ikkis stands as a final tribute to his lifelong dedication to storytelling and performance.
